Kiss of Flames - Bria Lexor
ONE
Iawoke lying in a bed. I glanced around the room and didn’t recognize my surroundings. It was enormous. The walls were lavender, a large white wooden dresser lined the wall to the left. There was a balcony with French doors, a massive closet, and a bathroom. My name is Aria Windguard. At least, I thought it was. My mundane parents who adopted me when I was a baby named me Elisa Winchell, but after being in Acadia Academy, I learned my real name is Zara DeRaps. I am a vampire princess. I know it’s crazy, right? I’m still trying to wrap my head around it myself. I am seventeen; I have long dark hair, emerald, green eyes. I’m slim, short and I’m beautiful. I heard the door, and I quickly closed my eyes, pretending to be asleep.
She’s still sleeping,
I heard Exley whisper to someone as they entered the bedroom. I lay perfectly still but opened an eye to peek at them as they approached me. What will we tell her when she wakes up?
I’ll tell her the truth,
a gentle female voice spoke. She is my daughter, after all.
I saw a beautiful woman. She had dark hair put up in a cat ears hairstyle, she was short, probably five feet, she had flames in her pupils. They had to be contacts. Nobody had flames as their actual eye color. Did they? Her name was Zyra. She is the reigning queen of the Dark Region.
There was Nitan Westfall, a tall man with shaggy blonde hair, neon green eyes. He wore a long forest green trench coat. He was Zyra’s royal guardian. As well as Exley’s biological father. Exley Winchester stood near me. He is seventeen, with short blonde hair. He’s taller than I am. Six foot I believe. He has emerald eyes and is the spitting image of Nitan. Who he despises with a passion. And there is Headmaster Cade Winchester. He is the headmaster of Acadia Academy. The Academy I recently enrolled in. He is Exley’s adopted father. He is an older gentleman, with long gray hair. He is tall and slim.
May I speak to you in private, father?
Exley asked.
Sure son,
Headmaster Cade replied.
Exley looked uncomfortable for a moment. I... was actually to Nitan.
I peeked at him, and he wore a look of surprise on his face. Sure, Exley,
Nitan exclaimed, unable to hide his surprise. He quickly regained his composure. Let’s talk outside in the courtyard.
I watched them leave the room and Headmaster Cade beamed with pride. It’s about time that boy is finally speaking to his father.
Yes, it is,
Zyra stated. I will stay with stay with Zara so you can get a bite to eat if you’d like Mr. Winchester.
That is a fine idea,
he exclaimed. I shall see what they have for lunch.
A moment later, I heard him walk across the room and his footsteps headed up the hallway before they fell silent.
You can open your eyes now, Zara,
Zyra whispered with a slight laugh. All the men left.
How did you know I wasn’t sleeping?
I asked as I opened my eyes and sat up in bed. They covered me in a thick royal purple comforter. It was hot, so I tossed it off my body.
Because I’m your mother,
she replied. And I’m psychic, so I know a lot about you.
Oh,
I answered as I swung my legs across the edge of the bed and stood. Where am I exactly?
You are home,
she responded with a smile. I would like to welcome you to the Dark Region.
So, we’re not at Acadia Academy?
I asked.
Not at all,
she replied. We had to send everyone home.
This is my fault,
I whispered. The last thing I remember was Zora removing Lain’s spirit from my body... and... total chaos erupting after Angelus Morelock bit Setha’s neck.
I gasped as fear shot throughout my entire body. Is she dead?
I’m dead,
Setha replied as she entered the room. My eyes widened when I looked at her. She had long, wavy dark hair. She was around my height, slim, beautiful. But her eyes. They were white with a red ring around the edges of them. Sort of.
What the hell is she?!
I asked Zyra as I got into a defensive stance.
She’s a Varacolaci like your father,
Zyra replied calmly. You get used to the eyes after a while.
So, you want to eat lunch with me and Zora or what?
Setha asked dryly.
Yes?
I spoke more like a question instead of a normal response. I mean, absolutely.
Well,
Setha snapped. Hurry, I’m starving.
I’ll see the two of you later,
Zyra stated, still wearing the smile upon her beautiful face. Please be pleasant to your older sister, Setha.
What are you talking about, mother?
Setha queried, rolling her eyes. "I’m always pleasant."
Zyra laughed as she exited the room. She always assumes I’m in a bitchy mood,
Setha hissed as I followed her out of the bedroom. Our father taught me how to be... tame.
You Varacolaci are the sworn enemy of us Stregoni Benefici, aren’t you?
I inquired as we walked down the staircase. We stepped into a vast area, and I followed her into a nearby room on the left. It was the dining room. I found Headmaster Cade seated at a long table.
We are,
Setha replied. But you aren’t a full-blooded Stregoni Benefici, are you?
I thought I was?
I spoke. But I’m still pretty new to the whole vampire thing.
Why hello ladies,
headmaster Cade called, waving at us as we approached the table. Please join me for lunch, will you?
Of course, Headmaster Cade,
I uttered, forcing a smile as I took a seat in the middle and sat down. Is Exley alright?
I inquired, pretending not to know he was with his father.
Yes,
Headmaster Cade responded as he cut into his steak. It’s uncooked, and I wasn’t used to being a newly awakened vampire yet. It scared me a little. He is out in the courtyard with his father as we speak.
Really?
I asked, trying to act surprised. A server entered the room and placed a crystal glass in front of me. He then poured blood into it and walked across the other side to pour Setha’s glass.
How are you feeling, Zara?
Zora inquired as she entered the dining room. She had long, flowing dark hair clipped up in the back. She was slim, taller than me by a few inches. She was beautiful. Her eyes were white with black pupils, and they glowed. They also adopted her as a baby. But her powers are awakened by my father Timbrax recently. She was my best friend while she was posing as Florence Novel. She had some resemblance to Exley and Nitan. She’s Lain’s reincarnation. Vampires killed a girl named Elaina Frayfield in battle when my parents were out killing my deranged grandmother, Queen Velika. They placed her powers as the Catalyst of Destruction inside of my body. I nearly died before she expunged it from me.
I feel better, thank you,
I replied as she pulled out a set beside me and sat down. The server returned and placed a glass in front of her and poured blood into it. How is Blake?
He’s recovering just as you are,
she answered. Blake Lumex is a Cruxim vampire. He’s created by the Red System Corporation and captured by my parents. He worked alongside them so he could live. Lain was his partner, and when she died, he was heartbroken. I only knew these things because of my psychic abilities.
Are you okay Zora?
I whispered.
I am now that I have my powers returned, yes.
She responded as she picked up her glass and placed it to her lips. She took a drink and set it down on the table.
That’s good,
I uttered, forcing a smile. So, what happens now?
We have to return to Acadia Academy,
Headmaster Cade sighed. A new student is already waiting for me as we speak.
The server returned and placed a plate with a raw steak and cooked fries down before me. It looked disgusting yet, I was craving blood. I picked it up and took a bite. It was excellent.
I quickly finished my steak in five bites before I attacked the fries. You must be starving Zara,
Zora mumbled. You haven’t eaten in twelve days.
I swallowed my food and glanced at her. I’ve been out for twelve days?
Yeah,
Setha voiced from across the table. We had to come here so the drama with the mundane vampire hunters would die down.
Do they still want to kill us?
I questioned.
They can’t even if they wanted to,
Setha
