Introduction
Project Leadership
WHILE WORKING IN management and project management, I observed that some leadership practices almost always led to success, but if these practices were skipped, they often resulted in disappointing outcomes. These were not elusive skills that only a few could learn but skills and practices everyone can develop quickly on the job and use to substantially improve their career and family life.
You have the potential to develop the leader in you. True leadership stems from learned skills, and anyone can do so with the right on-the-job training and experience. Leadership is not just a position you hold but how you conduct yourself. Making the choice to develop the leader in you will impact every aspect of your life. A leader works with others to achieve a vision or goal.
This book is designed to help you develop project leadership skills and practices. As a project leader, you
• Use your leadership skills with the sponsor, stakeholders, and your team to lead them to success;
• Create focused, energized teams to reach peak levels of productivity;
• Find amazing opportunities that you never thought possible; and
• Create wealth for yourself and your family.
My goal is to help you recognize and affirm your unique leadership skills and knowledge, your potential, and your ability to expand into what makes you extraordinary. Take action and verify your greatness, as it will benefit and enhance the lives of everyone you work with. For example, by building high-performing teams, not only will it benefit you, but each team member will be energized and open to new ideas. If you are able to form strong partnerships with your project sponsor (a manager or executive with accountability to deliver the project vision, governance, and agreed-upon business benefits for the organization) and resolve any issues with the project, you will be viewed as someone who can move to other opportunities while your sponsor will trust you, value your skills, and support you.
Expanding your leadership skills enhances your ability to have a thriving career. The skills I discuss have brought me much success.
Leadership is one of the most important skills in project management. The four phases of project management involve leadership skills and practices that, in combination, can bring you amazing success. Leadership begins as soon as the project is assigned to you. There is a strong relationship between your leadership and your team’s performance. As you spend time developing your leadership skills and continue to grow, your teams are also growing and becoming extraordinary. The synergy between you and your team will lead you to amazing success. If you immediately establish yourself as the leader, you will find the overall project enjoyable and energizing for your team.
This book focuses on the leadership skills and practices needed at each of the four phases of project management. Below is a brief summary of the importance of each phase, which has an entire chapter devoted to each leadership skill and practice.
Chapter 1 is project initiation, or building a foundation for success. Leadership skills and practices are described to help you become a leader to the sponsor, stakeholders, and team members through communication and the importance of forming strong partnerships. Leadership and good communication are tools needed to successfully complete a project.
Chapter 2 is planning the project or creating amazing teams. Leadership skills and practices to help you build a highly productive team are discussed. The focus is on specific ways to build your role as a leader. If you are unsuccessful in developing your leadership role during project initiation and planning, it is almost impossible to deliver the business results. Both initiating and planning the project are time intensive but pay amazing dividends. In some organizations there is a tendency to skip these two phases and jump right into the work of the project. Not only will the project have less chance of success, but you may not be viewed as a leader. In these situations, each team member often works independently without a strong sense of team or commitment to the project.
Chapter 3 is about delivering project success, which builds on initiation and planning. The leadership skills and practices you have followed while planning and executing the project will enable you to achieve success. For example, if the project did not include planning but jumped immediately into completing tasks, risks have not been identified, and a risk mitigation process is not in place. The risks and problems continue to build during the project until there is such a mountain of problems that it is almost impossible to resolve them. The reason this occurs is that everyone is working independently and may not recognize the risks or thinks it is everyone else’s responsibility to solve them.
Chapter 4, project close or celebrating success, is the end result of a successful project. You will now be
