ABOUT THE AUTHOR
The writer, Kat Leehan, was born in St Mary Hospital, Hong Kong in October 1938. She came to Singapore with her immigrant parents on board a ship, when she was 2 months old, before the Second World War.
Most of the people in her generation back then were poor and they carved out a livelihood doing whatever they could for a living. Her parents irked out a living by being street hawkers, selling cooked food as a living, her late father was a very good chef.
With the help of some kind friends, her father managed to obtain permission to take up a stall in the canteen of a primary school in Club Street (South Bridge Road) in the city.
As she grew up, she was lucky to get enrolled as a student in a co-education primary school, where young students of boys and girls attended schooling together.
