    INTRODUCTION

This is a chronicle of reflections from Frank Wodiuk after he had brain surgery for a tumor in the middle of his brain. He was identified as having a brain tumor after developing increasing severe headaches. This led to an MRI which identified the tumor. It was small but because of where it was located, even if it was not cancerous, as it continued to grow it would almost assuredly continue to cause problems. Frank and his wife met with a specialist who did surgery to remove tumors like this. Not only did this specialist do the surgery that was needed, he was known for having developed this surgery. The meeting was brief. The surgeon explained that the tumor was likely to continue to grow. From the MRI, it could not be determined whether the tumor was cancer or not.

The choices were to continue to observe or to have surgery. There may have been a middle choice but neither remember those. As surgeons do, he identified the potential outcomes as surgery with no significant lasting effects beyond recovery to death. Since the tumor was in the middle of the brain, the hypothalamus, there would be incisions through brain to reach the tumor. With that and the surgery itself, there was a risk of possible stroke as well. Frank is usually an all or nothing kind of guy. He looked at the surgeon and asked when the surgery could be scheduled.

The surgery took place on August 11, 2011. Frank worked the day before came home and showered with the special solution he was given to decrease the bacteria on his skin. That morning, he and his wife got up about 3 am to get to the hospital in time for the preparation for the surgery. The surgeon with whom they had met previously came to the pre-operative area, the surgeon who would be doing much of the work under the supervision of the specialist came to introduce himself as well. The doctor who would be managing the anesthesia also came to review Frank’s history. Once he was identified with ID bands and allergy bands, had multiple IVs in place, and everyone had spoken with him, it was time and he was rolled from the preparation are to the surgical suite.
