    ACT ONE SCENCE I

It is 10pm at night the generating set is put off and there is total darkness in the sitting room where John relaxes contemplating on some burden deep within. The sitting room is fairly comfortable befitting a retired civil servant’s home. Akachukwu sits at the balcony engrossed in some interesting stories echoing loud from an old radio he bought in the 60s. After about what appeared a decade John opens up.

John: Daddy, I have been waiting for an opportunity like this where both of us can be alone to discuss an issue that has been a burden in my heart for some years now.

Akachukwu: Take that stool and sit close to me (John obeys). What is the matter my dear son?

John: It is my dream to go to the seminary and become a priest someday. Daddy you know that mummy has never liked the idea. I am worried.

Akachukwu: Hmmn. I know that your mummy wouldn’t want to hear anything about that matter again but I still believe that God’s will must prevail. If God actually called you, we must find a way around it and you will become whom he has destined you to be.

John: Daddy can I ask you a question?

Akachukwu: Of course you can my dear what is it?

John: Was my mother a catholic before you married her or you imposed this faith on her?

Akachukwu: Not at all there was no imposition anywhere. I married her from a staunch catholic family. But you know … (Listens a while quietly in case the wife is eavesdropping) women with their passion for grand children. She would not just let go easily.

John: But I am not an only son why would she not let me go to the seminary. At least my other brothers can give her grand children.

Akachukwu: You are our last son. And so there is a special attachment to you. You may not understand it. If you were a parent perhaps the picture will be clearer. (He looks at the clock on the wall beside the television) John, it is exactly midnight. We should be in bed by now. I promise you I will look for a convenient period to chat with your mother one more time on this issue. Till then, good night my son.

John: Good night daddy. At least I feel lighter.

(The next morning opens with an altar made of a wooden table by the right hand corner of the sitting room covered with immaculate white material with the crucifix of Jesus Christ at the centre and a small flower vase decoration. A chaplet is seen hanging on the crucifix and a bottle of olive oil beside it. It is 6am on a Friday morning, the hour of family prayer and all members of the family come out of their respective rooms with sleepy eyes to take their seats at the altar in commencement of morning devotion and prayers).

Akachukwu: Nnee Samson, where are the rest of the children?

Nnee Samson: (She calls on Martha) Martha, check your brothers’ rooms. Tell them we are waiting for them to begin the morning devotion (Martha stands up immediately and enters the room facing the outer door she is heard from the background calling on Samson, David and Chuks).

Martha: Samson, David, Chuks (With a loud voice calling from the background) (Back to her parents) they are coming maybe we can begin with chorus while waiting.

    Akachukwu: (Invites
