About this ebook

Gemstone is a cluster of poems designed to encourage, enlighten, inspire, and comfort.

Gemstone is mainly based on the authors belief and deep trust in the Word of God, especially when it comes to the power of friendship and love. Someone from his church commented, Your poems are always great messages written artistically. Another one stated, Your poems are very spiritual in context, and I know that is not an error. Some of the poems are the result of observation; others are the product of counseling with people facing stressful moments in their lives. Although at times a poem can transpire a gamut of human feelings and emotions when a heart is faced with the ups and downs of life, it can shine some rays of hope on us in the end. A leap of faith always transcends fear and doubt.

Gemstones variety and composition is a delight, and its musicality is appealing to the ears. Overall, Gemstone offers good thoughts for meditation, and it is an inspiration for a better tomorrow.

    DEDICATION

    41131.png

    To Claire, my wife

                                         You kissed my lips.

                                         You touched my hip.

                                         That’s all it took

                                         To make me leap.

                                         You pulled my ear

                                         To bring me near.

                                         Near to you, dear,

                                         I have no fear.

                                         You flashed your smile,

                                         Twinkled your eyes;

                                         Didn’t take a while

                                         To pull me by.

                                         I bless the day

                                         I found the way

                                         Toward your heart

                                         To ever stay.

    IN LOVING MEMORY

    41154.png

    Of Maguy Joseph

                             Many rightfully have wondered

                             About your quick departure;

God only could give an answer.

Until then, I think the future,

Yeah, could bring our mind to closure.

Just the thought you’re no longer here

Overwhelmed us at times, my dear.

Surely, if it has been for me

Ever, ever here you would be.

                             Pending our reunion again,

He’ll soothe us in our grief and pain.

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR OR INTRODUCTION

    41157.png

When in high school, my French and grammar teacher one day taught on the concepts of versification. Little did I know how that was going to influence me so far for the rest of my life. As an application of the course, he proposed as homework a topic in prose and another in poetry. I chose to write a poem Les Saisons d’Haiti (The Seasons of Haiti). My very simple text was selected as the best. I received a high grade in French for the poem, and I was asked to read it in front of the whole class. That was how I took my first steps in the world of writing poetry. The muse and I became friends. Every weekend I would write one to three poems to read on Monday morning to my friends in school. Romance as a theme was prevalent. A few of those poems had a political tone to chastise or underline the abuse at that time in my country. By the age of nineteen, my first poetry book Où est Passé L’Espoir? (Where Has Hope Gone?) was ready to be published. I was nineteen years old, heading toward the school of medicine. The manuscript ended up in some drawer and never got published.

However, I didn’t stop writing poetry. Once in a while for some special occasions, my muse would visit me, and I would write. My outlook on life changed, and my thoughts matured. I left Haiti, my country of birth, and went to the United States to continue my studies in the medical field. Here in the States, I got married and continued to be faithful in church. In 2004, I rediscovered poetry after publishing my first book of prose, On the Other Side of the Desk, a true story about my beloved sister-in-law, Maguy Joseph, and three other friends from church who were dealing with cancer. Now I was able to write both in French and English. And one day as I was reading some of my poems, I fell in love with my old writings. I was delighted by the musicality of the verses, moved by the feelings described, and touched by the universality of the emotions I had experienced. And as I was going through my compilation of poems, waves of memories flooded my mind. I selected the most pertinent ones and created Fantaisie de ma Jeunesse (Fantasia of my Youth), which was published in 2011. The response from the French-speaking audience to that special compilation of poems (written in French with a few of them also in English) was uplifting and a true inspiration. Therefore, right after writing my third book, Ye Are the Body of Christ, I found myself dreaming about poetry again, and Gemstone was born!

Gemstone is a cluster of poems designed to encourage, enlighten, inspire, and comfort. I wrote these poems in 2017. I would write one as I
