Author

Dr. Iris Weinhouse

Dr. Iris Weinhouse has a BA, MA and PhD in speech—language pathology. In her long career, spanning many decades, she has worked at colleges in the New York-New Jersey area, where she taught speech therapy courses. Her career has also included providing speech therapy to patients at hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and in home care. Most of these patients were elderly and suffered from dementia. It is from this vast experience that she was able to present this guide of activities and exercises to assist dementia patients in communication and thinking skills. Nan Huidekoper, a native Washingtonian, is a teacher and mother to four children. Nancy’s own mother started having signs of cognitive decline in her late seventies, and she cared for her for seven years until her death. This demanding situation was an education in patience, understanding, and love. Nancy witnessed firsthand the progression of memory loss. She came to believe there must be a better way for dementia sufferers, like her mother, to retrieve information than by simply repeating things over and over to them. Thinking of activities to encourage memory and organization for her mother inspired Nancy to imagine this book.

    In loving memory

When you deal with a person who’s experiencing dementia, you can see where they’re struggling with knowledge. You can see what they forget completely, what they forget but they know what they once knew. You can tell how they’re trying to remember.
