    CHAPTER 1

    Introduction

On January 20, 1970, in Baton Rouge. Louisiana, I was born into this world without the breath of life. A stillbirth was my beginning, already under attack by the enemy, trying to end my life before it even began. God performed a miracle that day, whether people believe it or not, because here I am today, forty-one years later, writing this book. I didn’t realize for many years that God had a plan for my life, and my relationship with him is the single most important relationship that I will ever have here on earth and for eternity. My hope and mission is to inspire the youth to seek the will of God now and learn to be wise at an early age so that God’s purposes will be fulfilled through everyone he chooses to use in whatever way he deems fit. I grew up as a normal child, playing and dancing and participating in all sorts of games. My year in kindergarten is but a cloudy vision, and I can’t remember much, but I can vividly see my very first teacher in my mind.

She is a native of Hawaii, and I remember her talking to my mom about my attendance in her class. She said that I was a good student but wouldn’t talk. I didn’t want to because I was shy. As I went through the years in grade school, I can remember running as fast as I could from the girls who were always trying to kiss me on the face and playing kiss chase, so I finally broke away from shyness.

By the sixth grade, I was a real prankster, right when I was supposed to be growing up. I had two good friends by then and a bunch of bad cousins.

A Look At My Life At 12

Singing and dancing was something I have always liked to do, and I even had an interest in music, but because of fear and ignorance, I didn’t take music seriously. I got out of the class after my first semester because other students always picked on the kids in the band and called them nerds. I wanted to be cool and not to be associated with the nerds because I didn’t know any better. Wisdom has taught me to not to worry about what anybody thinks of me because the only opinion that matters is God’s. My fear of being ridiculed, along with the people in music class and the band, was one of my first big mistakes, because my strong desire to sing and my interest in music were surely gifts from God, and I almost lost them due to my ignorance and fears. Thank God that he is full of grace and has let me keep my gifts, and now I exercise them daily to praise his name. God has placed some good people in my life, always to help me fulfill his purposes, and I always rejected them because I wanted to be the leader, when I should have been moldable and teachable because then God could have used me. God doesn’t use people that think they already know everything. Throughout the Bible, God used ordinary people to do extraordinary things so that everyone will know that it was God’s doing and not the person’s. I was totally blind to God’s plan even though I had been attending vacation Bible school, Sunday school, and church. At church is where I met LJ, who is still my best friend until today. David was my other friend, and he was a Christian also. He was one of the smartest people and friends that I have ever associated with and graduated at the top of the class. We attended Southeast Middle School, in Baton Rouge, and remained friends throughout high school.

In the sixth grade and twelve years old now, I was at a time when I was preparing for life. David and LJ knew that and were trying to convey that to me, but I wasn’t trying to hear them. No one comes to God on their own—they are drawn by God—because human nature despises the things of God and don’t understand them. Therefore, if someone is asking questions about spiritual matters, God is working; and if you are a Christian, you should stop what you are doing and join God. Help fulfill his purpose by working with that person until they come to know Jesus for themselves. Every time that happens, it is an invitation to work with God. I remember asking David spiritual questions, and if he didn’t know the answers off the top of his head, he would consult with LJ, and I would get the answer. David and LJ worked all the time together to do the things of God, but I wasn’t ready.

Being twelve, I believed that I had a long way to go before I had any real responsibility and would have to really take care of myself, and boy, was I wrong. By the time Jesus was twelve, he was already having deep discussions with religious teachers in so much detail and with so much wisdom that everyone that heard was amazed. That made me realize that he had already been in close association with the Father and had already been gaining wisdom before he was twelve. Back then I didn’t listen to David and LJ because the Christian life seemed really boring, and I already had enough studying to do with my schoolwork and homework. Little did I know that my education in theology was the most important education that I would ever obtain while here on earth. Still today the majority of students from the sixth grade and up do not have theology on their daily agenda because when it comes to studying religion, for some reason it has become less important in society and seems to be something done only when church is in session. David had already figured out that following Christ was a priority, and now I can see what I couldn’t see back then. David already knew what he wanted to do in life and was already planning his future because he was being led by God. I was busy popping fart bombs and pulling pranks to make the whole
