About this ebook
John MacDonald
John Macdonald was a distinguished management theorist, consultant and lecturer who wrote many influential books on management, business and politics. His special interest in the Great War and the fighting on the Italian Front in particular was inspired by a visit to the battlefields in Slovenia and Italy, and he made an in-depth study of the Isonzo battles and the entire campaign. He completed this book shortly before he died in 2011.

The Flower
THE ORCHID IS A RADIANT FLOWER,
IT BLOOMS ANEW EACH YEAR.
SO RARELY DOES IT SHOW THE WORLD,
JUST LIKE YOU, MY DEAR.
I’VE BEEN NEAR AND SEEN YOUR FACE,
SO BEAUTIFUL TO SEE.
ONCE IN A WHILE YOU OPEN UP,
AND SMILE FOR ONLY ME.
YOU TRY TO KEEP IT HIDDEN,
SO NO ONE ELSE WILL KNOW.
ONCE AGAIN, IT REAPPEARS
AND SETS MY HEART AGLOW.
SOMEDAY, WHEN YOU BLOOM FOR ME,
ONE THING I KNOW IS TRUE,
UNTIL I SEE THAT SMILE AGAIN,
I’LL STILL BE WATCHING YOU.
AT LAST THERE’S NO ONE LOOKING,
A GLORIOUS SURPRISE.
MY ORCHID HAS OPENED FOR ME,
I SEE IT IN YOUR EYES.
A FLOWER NEEDS SOME NURISHING,
A JOYOUS TASK TO DO.
BEHOLD THE BEAUTY IN MY LIFE,
MY DARLING, I LOVE YOU.
O Heart Of Hearts
BE STILL MY WRETCHED HEART, FOR A BREATH OF WIND HAS REVEALED YOUR BEGUILING FACE TO ME. AND I, SO LOST IN A FEVER OF LUST AND PASSION DO HUMBLY REQUEST YOUR FORGIVENESS UNTIL THE FUTURE IS NIGH FOR THE BOTH OF US. FOR ONLY ON THE MORROW CAN THIS SERVENT FIND THE MEANS OF EXPRESSION, WHICH THIS OCCASION TRULY MERITS. TO RUSH FORTH IN THIS FRENZIED CIRCUMSTANCE CAN NOT LEAD TO A FORTUITOUS CONCLUSION. IF THIS SHOULD EVER COME TO PASS, I COULD NOT BEAR TO CONTINUE IN ANY FORM OF NORMAL PURSUIT. NO, WITH EVERY BREATH I TAKE, I AM REMINDED OF YOUR SMILING FACE, YOUR GOLDEN HAIR, A LOOK, THE MOST INTRIGUING LOOK I HAVE EVER SEEN, AND WILL NEVER FORGET. IN AN INSTANT, ALL WAS LOST, AND ALL WAS THERE TO BE WON. MY HEART AND SOUL ARE LOST, AND GLADLY GIVEN UP TO YOU. THOUGH WE HAVE YET TO MEET, I KNOW YOU WELL. WHY NOT? I HAVE DREAMT OF YOU ALWAYS. IN THE DARKEST NIGHT, YOU WERE THERE. ON THE COLDEST DAWN, I FELT YOUR TOUCH, AND FEEL A SENSE OF CONTENTMENT I HAVE LIVED ALL THESE YEARS WITHOUT. O HEART OF HEARTS, HOW CAN I FIND THE WORDS TO MAKE YOU SEE WHAT I HAVE SEEN, TO MAKE YOU FEEL THE WAY I DO? I FIND MYSELF BERIFT OF THOSE LOQUATIOUS EXPRESSIONS THAT MAY WIN YOUR HEART FOR ME. I PROSTRATE MY SOUL AND PRAY. LORD, MAKE ME WORTHY, SO SOMEWHERE IN THE FUTURE I MAY TAKE YOUR HAND IN MINE, AND MAKE THIS VISION OF BEAUTY HAPPY FOR ALL THE DAYS THAT ARE YET TO COME. AN OATH OF UNDYING LOVE AND AFFECTION ARE ALL I HAVE TO OFFER. COME MY DEAR AND KNOW ME WELL. TOGETHER WE SHALL DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY, AND ON THE MORROW, START IT ALL AGAIN. FRIVILOUS? NO. ONLY WITH A TOUCH, NOT A SPOKEN WORD, WILL OUR HEARTS BECOME AS ONE. AND ONLY THEN, WILL YOUR HAND BELONG TO ME. IN YOUR EYES I I SEE THE FUTURE, AND IN MY OWN, A VISION OF THE PAST. STRAY NOT FAR BEYOND THE NEAR HORIZON, FOR I COULD NOT BEAR TO TURN AND NOT SEE YOU THERE. AT LAST, TO HAVE FOUND MY SOULMATE, MAKES ALL THOSE LONELY DAYS, AND STRIDENT TEARS, SEEM LIKE SOMEONE ELSES DREAM, OR PERHAPS THEIR NIGHTMARE. I DON’T KNOW, OR REALLY CARE, NOW THAT I HAVE FOUND YOU. SO WHISTFULLY I SING, AND ROMANTICALLY I DREAM OF YOU, ONLY YOU. WITH YOU HERE BY MY SIDE, I CONTENTEDLY WILL RESIDE, AND WITH NOTHING LEFT TO HIDE, I FEEL A SENSE OF PRIDE. YOU COULD BE MY BRIDE. WHAT ELSE IS THERE TO SAY? I NEED YOU ANY WAY. ON THIS OR ANY DAY, OUR LOVE IS HERE TO STAY.
A Silent Glen
LIKE A TREE DEEP IN A FOREST,
OR A FLOWER IN A FIELD,
THERE’S NO USE IN JUST PRETENDING,
OR ATTEMPTING TO CONCEAL.
LIKE A WHALE DEEP IN THE OCEAN,
OR A MINNOW IN A STREAM,
ALL THEY DO IS KEEP ON SWIMMING,
LIKE A NEVER ENDING DREAM.
WHEN YOU’RE STUCK IN MORNING TRAFFIC,
AND THERE’S NOTHING YOU CAN DO,
JUST CONSIDER WHAT YOU’RE DOING,
THEN PERHAPS YOU’LL MAKE IT THROUGH.
LIKE A RAINDROP IN A MIGHTY STORM,
FALLING ’TIL IT HIT’S THE GROUND.
WHEN THE EARTH NEEDS SOME REPLENTISHING,
AND IT HARDLY MAKES A SOUND.
LIKE THE LEAVES THAT SEEM TO FILL THE SKY,
ON A COLD AND WINDY DAY,
LEAVING ALL THE TREES SO BARREN.
HOW DID THINGS TURN OUT THIS WAY?
ON THE COLDEST DAY OF WINTER,
WITH TINY SNOWFLAKES FALLING DOWN,
I SIT AND WATCH THE FIRE BURNING,
WISHING YOU WERE STILL AROUND.
THERE’S NO USE IN ME PRETENDING,
AND NO WHERE FOR ME TO GO.
EVERY DAY WHEN YOU ARE GONE FROM HERE,
OH MY GOD I MISS YOU SO.
LIKE A TREE WITHIN A FOREST,
HIDDEN IN A SILENT GLEN,
I KEEP HIDING MY EMOTIONS,
HOPING YOU’LL COME BACK AGAIN.
LIKE A FLOWER IN AN OPEN FIELD,
GROWING ’TIL THE EARLY FALL.
WHY DID I EVER LET YOU GO AWAY?
IT MAKES NO SENSE AT ALL.
IF I EVER FIND MY WAY ACROSS,
LIFES LIVING FERTILE FIELD,
PERHAPS, THIS TIME, I’LL UNDERSTAND,
AND LET MY SECRET BE REVEALED.
THE ONLY THING WORTH WAITING FOR,
AND I KNOW THIS MUCH IS TRUE,
I’LL KEEP YOU HIDDEN IN MY BEATING HEART.
YES, I’M STILL IN LOVE WITH YOU.
A Tall Oak Tree
LAST NIGHT I HAD A DREAM, YES A PERFECT FANTASY. I CALLED YOU UP AND ASKED YOU TO DINE WITH ME. SURPRISINGLY ENOUGH, YOU ACCEPTED. I PICKED YOU UP AT SEVEN AND HEADED TO ONE OF MY FAVORITE EATING ESTABLISHMENTS. I HAD MADE RSERVATIONS, SO WE WERE SEATED AT ONCE. I ORDERED A BOTTLE OF MY FAVORITE WINES AND EVENTUALLY OUR DINNER AS WELL. IT WAS TRULLY SCRUMPTIOS AS ARE YOU MY DEAR. THE CONVERSATION LINGERED, AS DID I, NOT WANTING THE OCCASION TO EVER END. FINALLY THE MEAL ENDED AND I SUGGESTED A LOCAL CLUB WHERE WE MIGHT DANCE, FOR AWHILE. YOU SMILED AND SAID, WHY NOT.
WE WERE OFF, A SENSE OF EXITEMENT ENVELOPING EVERY BREATH I TOOK. IT WASN’T VERY FAR BUT IT TOOK FOREVER TO GET THERE. AT LAST WE ARRIVED. I OPENED UP YOUR DOOR AND GLIMPSED YOUR MAGNIFICENT LEGGS. FOR AN INSTANT, MY HEART STOPPED. HOW DO YOU DANCE WITH SUCH A CREATURE WHEN YOUR MIND IS QUESTIONING HOW YOU GOT HERE AND IT SURELY IS IMPOSSIBLE TO MEET HER STANDARDS OR EXPECTATIONS. THEN
