Princess Fiona Meets Lady Katie
Once upon a time, long ago, there lived a beautiful princess. She lived in a castle on the edge of a forest, with her mother, the queen, her father, the king, her two little dogs, Digger and Laggan, and her cat, Cairo. Fiona was an only child, so sometimes she was lonely.
The castle she lived in was on the edge of The Enchanted Forest. In front of the castle was Mystic Lake. Every morning, Fiona liked to watch the lake waters sparkle and dance in the sunlight. Soon, the days grew cooler until, one day, the snows started falling. Then, the lake became still. Fiona, being a curious little girl, asked her mother about it.
The lake is frozen,
the queen said. It does this every time the seasons change from fall to winter, when the weather becomes cold. You just don’t remember seeing it this way last year.
You're right, mom. I don't remember,
Fiona replied, It sure looks like fun. Can we go out and play?
We can, but you have to bundle up first. It's cold out there,
her mother added.
The queen went to a closet and took something out. Then she led Fiona down to the lake and strapped odd-looking boots on her. The boots had laces and hooks, but the strangest part for Fiona was the bottom. Instead of soles, these boots had blades.
"What are these?" Fiona asked.

Now you might already know what they are, but these boots were rare in The Enchanted Forest and this was the first time that Fiona had seen anything like them.
Skates,
her mother replied with a smile, as she began to lace them onto her daughter.
Soon, Fiona and the queen, along with Digger and Laggan, were having great fun on the ice. In no time at all, Fiona was skating and whirling around, as the two dogs barked and chased her happily along.
After a while, her mother left Fiona to tend to her queenly duties. Fiona found herself out of breath and wondering what to do next. Before she could make a plan, however, she felt a tap on her shoulder.
Hi,
a voice said.
Fiona turned and saw a pretty, little, strawberry-blond haired girl with a smiling face.
Who are you?
the princess asked.
My name is Lady Katie and I live over there,
she said, as she pointed to the other side of the lake. See my house? We just moved in last week.
Fiona knew the house. It had been empty for a long time. Old Mr. Anderson had once lived there before moving to The Far Side of the Forest, in The Great Beyond. From Fiona’s side of Mystic Lake, you could just see the outline of Katie’s house on the other side of the water. Fiona couldn’t believe her luck. Finally, she had a friend close by!
