Shirley Nichols

Shirley Yvette Nichols wrote poetry as an adolescent and did not resume for over 23 years. She began writing again during the fall of 2008 while participating in an on-line discussion started by a fellow Central State University graduate. She was encouraged by former college friends, including published poet Mekael L. Shane to pursue becoming published. This collection tells Shirley’s story. There are different eras and elements of her life described in poetic form. Shirley hopes to generate an interest amongst other writers and poets who hope to also become published. Shirley was born in Columbus, Ohio on December 20, 1969. She is the only child of Gloria (Spencer) Carroll (deceased) and Thomas Wesley Carroll. Shirley always loved to read and write as a child. However, as she approached high school, programs which nurtured the creative arts began to lose funding. Encouraged by her high school guidance counselor, Gloria Jones, Shirley attended college. She received her bachelor’s degree in social work in 1992 from Central State University. She then attended The Ohio State University whereby she received a master’s degree in social work in 1994. She has worked in the field of social work for over 14 years. Shirley is married to Keith Nichols since 1996. They are the parents of Ms. Kendal Trynese Nichols. Shirley is inspired by her ancestors in poetry as well as those who are unknown at the present time. Everyday life and relationships are her main inspirations. Shirley states, ” My goal is to touch lives by making the reader think and then take necessary action towards spiritual and emotional wholeness”.
