About this ebook

Just because youve decided to start eating healthy does not mean you need to give up great-tasting food.

George Griffith, who firmly believes that good eating, exercise, and a bit of music are the keys to healthy living, reveals a diet that is a prelude to good health.

He begins by examining the benefits of gooseberries, which grow wild in the temperate climates of the northern and southern hemispheres. They have few calories, lots of vitamins, and important mineralsand they are so delicious that presidents John Adams, Abraham Lincoln, and James Buchanan included them in their list of favorite dishes.

Youll also learn about other superfruits, including aronia berries, which have a high level of flavonoids and provide relief from allergies. They also have few calories and make delicious tart deserts.

If you live in the northern United States or in Canada, you may already know about these berries, but you may not appreciate their full value. Discover how these berries that have been staple fruits for centuries can be your very own prelude to good health.

George Griffith

George Griffith (1857–1906) was one of Britain’s great writers of science fiction and a noted explorer. After working as a schoolmaster in his twenties, Griffith found fame with the publication of The Angel of the Revolution, an account of a terrorist group that uses air warfare to take over the world. Griffith was also an avid explorer, setting the record for voyaging around the world when he performed the feat in just sixty-five days.

    PREFACE AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Thanks to the many people who have made contributions to this selection of ideas and recipes and to generous friends who have provided helpful reviews. This booklet is gratefully dedicated to the few authors who have, with an adventuresome spirit, written about good healthy food such as wild gooseberries, indigenous wild blueberries, aronia berries, Saskatoon berries and sugar-free diets. It extends the work of diet and nutrition authors who concentrate on healthy, weight loss, diabetes, vegetarian and gluten-free recipes.

The occasional less-than-serious tone is a fault or characteristic of the author. The focus of this work is to illustrate to readers that striving to be healthy does not mean giving up great flavors in food. People who restrict their diet to vegetables and fruit, or to a gluten-free diet or a diet necessary for diabetes, can enjoy healthy meals including well-seasoned vegetables, berries and other fruit, fish, spices such as cinnamon and turmeric(found in curry dishes), nuts, etc. Pursuing good health, whole grain bread (instead of white bread), whole grain unsweetened cereals and bagels are tasty substitutes for other bakery goods. Tea, or water in abundance with freshly prepared fruit juice, can and should be a good substitute for sweetened and artificially-sweetened soft and diet drinks.

Gooseberries, wild Maine blueberries, aronia berries and Saskatoon berries make up the center of attention here especially for those who live in the northern states and Canada. People have for centuries cooked with these berries, some overlooked today. Gooseberries and blueberries have been staple fruits in Europe for centuries.

Thanks to thousands who have provided healthy diet books and diet instruction and to my wife Suzanne who has spoiled me with delicious healthy meals
