The British East India Company and the Asiatic Society employed a well-planned, three-pronged missionary, historical, and academic assault on Indian education and culture to subjugate and fleece India. Friedrich Max Muller (18231900) was a missionary sent to India, masquerading as a Sanskrit scholar while he had not met any Indian scholar or had knowledge of Sanskrit before coming to India. He was hired at the age of twenty-four years in 1847 to translate the Vedas into English. If the British were genuinely interested in Vedic translations, they could have hired an indigenous scholar with proficiency in Sanskrit and English, with authentic historic perspectives on the Vedas and with a real feel of the Vedic religion. Max Muller had none of these. Neither English nor Sanskrit was his mother tongue. From the British point of view, his qualification was his firm commitment to his Christian mission. He, very tactfully, hired a couple of impoverished Sanskrit pundits (who could have been easily bribed) and got Vedas misinterpreted to destroy the Indian education system.

India was very rich before the British invasion .We had the GDP of a quarter of the whole world .Up to 1895, India was the only supplier/producer of diamonds. This wealth was looted from India. The British were draining money from India at a rate of three million pounds a year in 1838.

We have remained ignorant of misrepresentations and distortions of our nations history and have been incorrectly informed about our culture and heritage through the oral transmission of Vedic knowledge from generation to generation. This has been well explained by Dr. Alan Roland, an eminent American psychoanalyst, in his In Search of Self in India and Japan (1988, p.18).

I would like to point out that indifference of young Indians to our own history has been invitation to foreigners to write our history. Matlock, in his India Once Ruled the Americas (p.170), explains this: The one and only reason why we dont know about Indias true role in human history is our self-imposed ignorance of Indian mythology, history, and education system.

    This book is intended mainly for and dedicated to the youth of India. India has at present more than 50% of its population below the age of 25 and more than 65% below the age of 35. These eight hundred million energy fonts, with great dreams in their eyes, have the right to know what we were and why we are now. We were not a country of beggars, we were very rich. We were not a country of illiterates, we were highly literate. We were known as teachers of the world. We were highly developed in every sphere, especially in science and technology. We were healthy and wealthy. See in the following figures, the economic power of India, the India that was.

    Professor Angus Maddison, Professor Emeritus at the University of Groningen, Netherlands, and honorary fellow at Cambridge University estimated GDP of nations at different time periods as follows:

    Thus around 1700 AD India accounted for one fourth of world’ s total wealth.

    And more,

    1. India was the only producer/ supplier of Diamonds before 1895

    2. India was often called Golden Bird and it is a fact that India owned most gold of the world before British invasion. About 75% of world’s gold was in India.

    3. India is the only country that is termed a subcontinent. You know why. Because it separated from African continent and stayed a separate continent of its own with all its resources available with no other nations to share.

    This was just before the British invaders took control of India.

    We see today that Europeans are stinking rich. Their people are bristling with money all over. But they have not earned it. They had no agriculture worth the name. Agriculture is backbone of any nation’s economy. This is the wealth looted from India. The East India company was draining money from India at a rate of three million pounds a year in 1838, literally, a king’s ransom in those days. This was sheer murder. How our wealth was taken away, our intellectual property rights and knowledge and our psyche, the youth of India have the right to have the answers to these questions. After all they are the legal heirs of all the wealth that was.

    Unfortunately now, Indian youngsters prefer western movies, they swoon over film celebrities and adopt their forms of dress and lifestyle.

    Self esteem of the Indians has been bashed by these education systems which were channeled for having a smooth functioning of British rule on us, rather than our development.

    As a result of this still prevalent education system, which does not create opportunities, but creates clerks, the youth of rural India have started moving to Cities and not getting occupation there, some of them resort to crime.

    Today, ancient principles are looked upon as something obsolete, something that restricts the style that those who look to the West want to adopt. Thus, they are leaving Indian traditions behind and losing respect for anything ancient. In this way, they adopt foreign standards and lifestyles and lose respect for ancient Indian values so much so that they are embarrassed to admit their Indian background and heritage. Not their fault anyway.

    Sanskrit scholars at the places of worship are also slowly dying out due to commercialism. Ramayana and Mahabharata have turned into gaudy television shows.

    India has been invaded by foreigners so many times and has always survived. But here we are talking about something more than wealth or geographical loss. The Indian culture itself is threatened. Indian youth should not give up their Vedic heritage, because if they return to it, when it is too late, and when they are older, looking for more cultural support, loss which has occurred with each generation, will be never fully recovered. Most of it will be lost forever.

    I exhort the youth of India to go into the root cause of this calamity. We cannot undo what happened in the past, but understanding the reason is certainly necessary to prevent us from making those mistakes again.

    The British destroyed our education system in a planned manner by misinterpreting our study material, our Vedic texts. We, the Indians, used to learn the lessons of life from these text books. We learnt basics from them, did higher studies, obtained professional knowledge and worked and made money and lived very happy lives. And made our country great. Vedas are not traditional holy scriptures, to be chanted every morning by rote. Vedas teach us art of living. Vedas have nothing to do with any religion. These are the textbooks of all branches of knowledge. Sanskrit language too does not belong to any religion. It is the language of nature.
