Falcon and the Mouse
By Robert Marquiss
Chapter I: The Beginning
A well dressed elderly man is sitting at a table outside a high class, fenced in coffee shop. He is sipping the last bit of coffee in his cup. Wallet drawn, he lays a tip down on the table.
He hears the owner yelling at the steward. The gray haired steward comes out, a bit sad, bows, retrieves the cup, saucer and tip, and under the trying circumstances tries to force a smile, saying, I-it is always a pleasure to have you here Sir.
The elderly man says, You have been very kind to me for a long time, my friend, and have done your job very well, even under pressure, like now,
and laughs as he looks at the owner with a stern face. Do you need help?
The Steward shakes his head with a smile and says No, but thank you, Sir.
The elderly man continues, Take care, my friend,
nods and leaves.
Outside the fence, a Bentley pulls up to the curb. A uniformed oriental chauffeur elegantly exits the car and opens the right rear door. The elderly man, with cane in hand, enters the Bentley. As he sits down, he pulls a photo from his inside coat pocket and stares at it. It’s a picture of a beautiful slim 27 year old woman in tight jeans and t-shirt, with long flowing hair. The photo sparkles and comes to life. It shows her hair dancing in the air as she jumps towards the tree tops in a forest setting then lands in a graceful ballet move. . He quietly tells her, I’m making a difference, my Little Mouse.
The chauffeur, now seated at the wheel, asks, Where to, sir?
The elderly man replies, To the well. We have work to do.
Years earlier the elderly man was walking down a narrow street in Chinatown. Three men were standing in his path near an alley way. The man in the center, a heavy-set bruit, clenched his broad knuckled fists in the elderly man’s face and stated, Wrong place to be on a deserted street, Pops.
Then he opened one hand and in a low gruff voice he threatened, Let’s make this easy. Just give me your wallet and I won’t bash your face in.
The other two laughed. One, grinning evilly at the old man said, Easiest catch of the day.
From the third story of the old abandoned building on the corner, a young homeless girl in tattered clothes watched what she knew was going to happen through the broken glass of a window. She stayed hidden, hand clenched against her lips and almost crying, as she watched it happen.
The elderly man looked up at the thug confronting him and harshly replied, No!
The center thug threw a fist furiously through the air and hit the old man in the face with bone crushing impact, twisting his head to the side. The old man’s body shook from the impact. The other two men gleefully began pounding the old man with great ferocity.
Later, wallet gone, the old man had been left in a mangled state, heaped in the alley entrance. As the sun went down, a dumpster cast a shadow over the old man’s body until night fell to blackness.
The young girl came down to see how the old man was doing. Coming close to him, she thought to herself, I wish I knew what I could do to help you. Strange, somehow I feel I know you.
She reached in her tattered jacket, pulled out a water bottle and gave the old man a drink. As he lifted his head to sip the water she noticed the big burn scar on his right cheek. Part of it formed a broken cross. Her eyes got big as she thought, Is it you? Is it really you?
She got teary-eyed. She looked up, startled, as she heard someone coming and in a flash ran back into the building.
The girl watched from above as a boney hand appeared from nowhere in what moonlight was shining on the old man through the buildings around him. The hand shook the old man’s body. The man moaned through battered lips. The hand grabbed the old man by the collar of his coat and started to drag him away down the alley as another boney hand grabbed his broken cane and carried it away.
The girl watched as the old man was being dragged away saying to herself, This is not right. I wish there was something more I could do.
About a block down, the old man was dragged to a stairwell leading to a basement. The bony hand dragged the old man down the stairs. The old man moaned again and again as his body hit every step on the way down. Bolts slammed and an Iron door creaked open. The bony hands dropped the cane by the door then dragged the old man into a laboratory and lifted him up onto a table.
Holding his hand in the air, crushed and bloodied from a heavy foot stomp, he whimpered, God help me.
An elderly Chinese voice said Ah, you are still alive and you talk. Very good. I do not have to bring you back from the dead,
and laughed, I am Dr. Wu, not God, but I help you.
As the bony hands tended to the old man’s wounds it was seen that they were Dr. Wu’s. The Doctor continued, "You may be out for some days. There is much to fix. I have some herbs, teas and minerals that no one else has. I have spent many years in India and the Himalayas getting these special herbs, chemicals and knowledge. Your hand will be good. I will fix it. Make it better than before. Not to worry. Do
