While an English major at college, I wrote a column which was published weekly. I have been writing ever since. The old West and Los Angeles in the forties are eras which lend themselves to tales of romance, courage, and fast paced adventure. I particularly enjoy writing stories about the mail order brides who fearlessly took a chance and traveled West, hoping to find love and a better future. Many of the locales that I write about are places that I have either traveled through or actually lived in. I try to make my works richly accurate. My desire is to provide you with an entertaining and fun read. When I'm not writing, I enjoy spending time with my wife and two children.

Mail Order Bride - Kenneth Markson

To my wife and children, always.

    Chapter 1

Alexandra Chase loved the excitement of the growing city.  She was a pretty twenty year old school teacher who taught elementary school children in a small rural town just outside of Baltimore.  Farming was the primary occupation in the town, since it was blessed with some of the fertile land that surrounded Chesapeake Bay.

On weekends, Alexandra would enjoy going into the downtown section of Baltimore.  She liked to watch the people, explore the shops, and go down to the harbor area.  Baltimore was a leading garment center, and she enjoyed looking at the latest fashions, even if she was too poor to purchase any of them.

It was a bright sunny afternoon that fateful day.  Alexandra had just come out of a millinery shop.  She felt a gentle sea breeze, as she sauntered up the street eyeing the items in the store windows.

Later, she would recall the exact moment that an accident occurred which would change her life forever.  She had just turned to admire an interesting looking clock, when a horse drawn wagon carrying wooden barrels, whipped around the corner.  The driver was in a hurry, eager to deliver his merchandise to a market up the street.

Perhaps, if Alexandra had been walking straight ahead, she might have been able to avoid the catastrophe.  But, with her eyes focused elsewhere, she never had a chance.  A barrel which had been stacked too high, bounded off the wagon, and smacked into her leg.

Alexandra was immediately knocked to the pavement.  She tried to get up, but could not.  The pain in her right leg was excruciating.

    Help me! she cried out.

An elderly gentleman approached her first.  He began speaking to the passersby.

Give me a hand! he shouted.  This young lady has been hurt badly!  She needs to see a doctor right away!

The driver of the horse drawn wagon kept moving down the street, disappearing from sight.  Perhaps he was unaware of the harm that he had caused.  Perhaps not.

Several other people joined in; and Alexandra was transported by carriage to the City Hospital.  It was a place where the poor and needy could receive medical treatment.

    Chapter 2

Alexandra laid in her bed, when the doctor gave her the solemn news.  He was a tall,
