While an English major at college, I wrote a column which was published weekly. I have been writing ever since. The old West and Los Angeles in the forties are eras which lend themselves to tales of romance, courage, and fast paced adventure. I particularly enjoy writing stories about the mail order brides who fearlessly took a chance and traveled West, hoping to find love and a better future. Many of the locales that I write about are places that I have either traveled through or actually lived in. I try to make my works richly accurate. My desire is to provide you with an entertaining and fun read. When I'm not writing, I enjoy spending time with my wife and two children.

Mail Order Bride - Kenneth Markson

To my wife and children, always.

    Chapter 1

Clara Grant was sitting on a park bench in Cincinnati's Fountain Square.  She was taking a short lunch break from her job as a schoolteacher at the Whitman School, which was a few blocks away.  Clara had been working at the school for nearly a month, and she enjoyed her daily routine of walking to the park to stretch her legs.

It was a pleasant day in late spring, and many well dressed ladies and gentlemen were walking about in the square.  Not far from her, was the famous fountain for which the square was named.  It featured a nine foot figure, known as the Genius of Water, which stood with arms outstretched, reaching out to those passing by.

The statue had separate areas, providing cool drinks to people and animals alike.  Clara smiled as she watched birds sipping from the fountain's basins.  She got up from the bench, and started heading back to the school.

This gentle esplanade formed the center, at the heart of the city of Cincinnati.  Blessed by location, the city itself lay perched on several hills, overlooking the Ohio River.  That made it a prime site for shipping and business.

It seemed a world away, Clara thought to herself, from the rural farm that she had grown up on in northern Kentucky.  Clara enjoyed teaching the young children at the school.  This afternoon, she intended to work on their reading skills.

When she got back to the school, she had the children take out a small reading book, from their desks.  She wanted to determine the level that each of the children were on with respect to reading, and find out whether some needed more work than others.

Their young, eager faces smiled as she got up to speak.

Alright, children, she said, please take out your reader, and we will start reading a few chapters.

She looked out over the group.

Who wants to start first? Clara asked.

There were a number of hands that raised in the air.

I do! I do, Miss Clara! one young boy said.

Good.  William please proceed, Clara said.

The young boy stood up, and was about to begin, when there was a knocking on the door.

    Come in, Clara said.

Sorry to interrupt, Miss Pickford apologized, as she stepped into the classroom.  Principal Leach asked me to give you the message to stop by his office, at the end of the school day.

    Certainly, Clara replied.

Miss Pickford quickly left, and the door was closed.  At the time, Clara thought nothing of it.

    Chapter 2

Principal Leach was seated at his desk, when Clara knocked on his office door.  Clifton Leach was a tall man in his fifties, with black hair, dark brooding eyes, and pointed, aquiline features.  His wire rimmed glasses were perched halfway down his nose, giving him a menacing look when he glared at someone.

Ah, Miss Grant, he said, seeing her at the door.  Please do come in.

You asked me to stop by, Clara said.

    "Why, yes I
