    Introduction - What is meditation?

You may have heard the word Meditation many times before and had some preconceived ideas about what it is. So, to begin, let’s define what Meditation is and what it can do to the mind and body.

Meditation can be simply explained as being for the mind what a workout is for the body. Just as a workout for the body helps the body become stronger and more ready to deal with larger stressors, Meditation helps the mind become stronger, calmer and more able to do with stress.

In its origins, the word meditate means to think deeply about something, and in Buddhist tradition, the word Meditation is actually similar to a word like exercise in that it covers a variety of techniques. Also, in Buddhism, meditation is one of the three core practices that one is supposed to perform in order to achieve a sense of purification of the mind. This will lead on to a sense of Nirvana (an ideal sense of calm or peace). There are other definitions of mediation as well. For instance, in Christian tradition, meditation is a form of contemplative prayer that creates a feeling of connection with God.

Now widely known in Western culture, the term has come to mean a mental exercise in which we focus attention and focus ourselves mentally in order to achieve a state of relaxation.

That said, just as our Buddhist brothers thought, there are still many different kinds of meditation, and as with exercises and sports, some meditation techniques are more suitable to some people than others.

Whatever technique is used, the end result is the same – to achieve a certain sense of calm, to reduce stress and to be more mentally balanced.

Meditation often involves relaxation, focus, and awareness, and is usually done individually (although there may be groups of people doing meditation, it is usually done inside one’s own mind). Many Meditation techniques require the eyes to be close, but there are many (as you will see in the book) that are done with eyes-open. And finally, Meditation is usually performed while the body is still (again, there are many exceptions as you will see below).

    How This Book Works

In this section, we will briefly explain how Meditation works, the scientific research that has been done, the benefits you will receive, and we will include tips on how to incorporate mediation into everyday life.

Thereafter, in the chapters that follow, you will find 20+ Meditation techniques for you to experience. We also include a section on supplements and foods that can aid relaxation and meditation.

What Happens In Your Brain When You Meditate?

Modern science has given us answers to this fascinating question.

Using techniques such as FMRI scans, we have seen that what is taking place in our brains when we meditate.

Simply put, there is a big decrease in Beta Waves, which are the active ways the brain processes information. In other words, the brain starts to process information much more slowly than normal.

Also, the fMRI shows that each part of the brain is affected differently:

•The Frontal Lobe, which is responsible for thinking and emotions is very inhibited and almost goes silent.

•The Parietal Lobe, which processes the information from the senses also slows down considerably.

•The Thalamus, which is the first stop of the sensory information focuses the Meditator’s attention into an area deep in the brain and stops the sensory information to a trickle.

•Reticular Activation System, which keeps the brain alert and active, is also slowed down.

So, in a nutshell, the brain stops processing all that information that usually causes us to be alert and sometimes anxious. We focus instead on feelings deep within the brain.

Little Known Bio Chemistry Behind Meditation And Relaxation Exercises

You’ve probably heard of plenty of relaxation exercises, or meditation before, but have never really understood the benefits it can have on your quality of life in general. This is because the majority of relaxation exercises or meditation exercises that you may have been exposed to, tend to focus
