    Last One Home by Debbie Macomber is a novel about persevering through tough times. It also shows how strong the bond between sisters can be.

    Sisters Karen, Cassie, and Nichole have a happy childhood. They play hide-and-seek and other games with the children in the neighborhood. This changes when Cassie, at the age of eighteen, goes against the advice of her family and marries Duke Carter.  She leaves her family after a terrible argument with them.

    Duke is controlling and abusive. He prevents Cassie from contacting her family and keeps her isolated. The beatings grow so severe that Cassie fears she will die. She flees with their daughter, Amiee, to a women’s shelter where they start their lives over again.

    Cassie moves back to her home state of Washington after Duke is sentenced to jail for domestic abuse.  She contacts her sisters, but their relationship remains strained. She trains to be a hairstylist and finds a job. She and Amiee move into a small apartment. Out of gratitude and an effort to give back, Cassie volunteers at a women’s shelter.
