Out of Sight - Tashina Tradell

    Chapter 1

With the sun shining on those beautiful golden blond curls and bright blue eyes, Russell couldn’t decide what was more stunning. His daughter was the spitting image of her mother, who had just recently left them from a long time run in with cancer. It seemed the luck in their family was just a hair shy of what they felt they deserved.

It was too bad that she would grow up knowing only a simple image of her mother, missing her soft touch and evanescent flowing voice. Jackson had more to hold on to than Kaylee had. Since their mom had died when Kaylee was only a few years old, she was protected in a way from the hurt of losing her mother.  Jackson was six at the time, old enough to know that he would no longer have his mother there with him.

Time for dinner, Russ yelled out to the never ending energetic children playing in the front yard.

Dad, Kaylee automatically complained as she entered the front door, Jackson on her tail.

She’s lying dad, he yelled, his wild dark brown eyes sneering at his sister as he tried to get to Russ before his sister could.

He stole my bike and said he was going to sale it to get a skate board, she accused as she washed her hands in the kitchen sink, barely able to reach the faucet even with standing on the wooden foot stool that was made especially for her.

Russ had remembered seeing Jackson with her bike so he knew that she wasn’t lying.

I wasn’t really going to sell it dad, Jackson practically pushed his sister out of the way to wash his own hands as he added, I was just playing with her.

Enough with the fighting, he baited his children, even though by now he had learned to tune out their bickering. Sit down at the table.

Jackson stuck his tongue out at Kaylee, shaking his head full of chestnut brown hair as Kaylee did the same in return. Russ had wished that his wife had been around for times like this. He still loved her more than he could even explain, but he knew that he had to move on. It had been four years since she had passed. Jackson was now ten and Kaylee was six, the same age that Jackson was when they lost their mom. Russ couldn’t imagine Kaylee growing up without any feminine influence in her life, so he decided to recently start dating again.

That was actually why he had rushed the kids in to have dinner. He had to make sure that they were fed and bathed before the babysitter came by. Even though his kids were normally in bed by ten pm on the weekends, he didn’t plan to be home in time to tuck them in. Seth, his closest and only friend, had showed him a picture of the lady he was hooking Russ up with tonight. She was definitely a looker, but not like his wife was.

Even though it had been years, he still had a twinge of guilt any time he even thought of being with another woman. It still felt like he was cheating on his wife. Angie was the most wonderful person he had ever known and no one would ever match up to her. Her beauty was so natural and perfect that she never once needed to put make up on her bright blue eyes and flawless peachy skin.

Russ’s sister in law had done so much to help over the years, and today was no different. She was the one that had actually encouraged him to start dating again, telling him that is what her sister would have wanted.

Aunt Beth is here, Kaylee jumped up from the table to look out the front widow and confirm her suspicions just as they had finished their meal.

I’m old enough to take care of myself, Jackson complained, even though Russ knew his son loved his Aunt Beth.

Jackson was getting to that age where he just wanted to be left alone to play his games. He had definitely become more reserved after his mother’s death, but he seemed to be getting through it ok.

Kaylee isn’t though, Russ reminded him, even though he didn’t think Jackson was old enough either, he didn’t want to upset his son so he just rolled with it.

Why do you need to date? Jackson made a disgusted look on his face as he added, girls are annoying and gross anyways.

Laughing, Russ picked up Kaylee’s plate and his own and stacked them in the sink.

You’ll understand when you are older, Russ nodded towards Jackson to bring his empty plate to the sink also. It’s your dish night buddy. After they are done you can go back to your games, but only until ten then it’s off to bed.

When are you gonna make Kay do dishes? he complained. I always have to do them and she doesn’t have to do anything.

She’s only six, Russ reminded him as he added, and she cleans her room.

There’s my handsome Jackie boy, Aunt Beth strolled into the dining area, her brunette curls bouncing above her shoulders.

Kay was already on her tail, ready to play whatever games her Aunt Beth had planned.

Ughhh....I hate that name, he grumbled under his breath to his aunt.

Oh! she threw her hands up in defense as she apologized, I’m sorry. I forgot Jackson.

He shrugged his shoulders and gave a little grunt as he began to wash the dishes.

It’s just a movie. Should be back by eleven or midnight, Russ tossed the words to Beth as he started gathering his keys and wallet.

No worries, her smile reached all the way to her hazel eyes. I’m just excited that you are finally doing this.

Well Seth was very persistent, he raised his brows at her. I hate blind dates. They never work out.

Be positive. She could be a really great person, Beth said as she picked Kaylee up in her arms. Now I’ve got some pretty golden curls on this beautiful princess’s head to brush so you better get going.

In bed at ten, Russ shouted after his sister-in-law
