    High Enough - Tashina Tradell

    Chapter 1

Katie’s head was throbbing with pain. Darkness surrounded every corner of her mind. She felt as if her body was numb and her legs were no longer going to hold her up. It all seemed like a moment frozen in time. The throbbing in her head wouldn’t go away and with every breath she took the agony became worse. She wanted to cry out in pain, but as soon as the thought came into her mind a new sensation coursed through her. Her throat burned as if acid had been poured down it.

Bringing her head back to its original position, Katie set the shot glass on the counter maybe a little too hard. She couldn’t make out exactly what had just happened but she knew she had wanted another shot of that deathly tasting liquid gold.

With the room spinning, she tried to retain the memory of why she was doing this in the first place. Getting completely drunk and throwing away all priorities was not something she did very often. She was at a party taking shots from Jacob, a man she had just met. As much as she had tried to push the memories of Craig to the back of her mind, they started to pour in like a monsoon as she swallowed another strong shot of anything in her reach.

GOOD MORNING MY LOVELY sexy hot stuff, said the man lying next to Katie. She stared at the man who looked like a beach god with blond locks and a six pack.

I love you Katie, he caressed her pale skin as they relaxed next to each other on her bed.

How could you say that and expect me to believe it when you have wallpapers of half-naked women all over your phone Craig? she responded hesitantly, knowing as soon as she said it that he hated these type of comments.

Oh please, he said, kissing her cheek and making a trail of moist kisses down her neck while grabbing a handful of her long dark brown hair. I would have you on there but you won’t let me have a picture of you like that.

You know why I won’t give you a picture like that, Katie rolled her eyes, hating the way she felt. I’m a freaking hippo, and I don’t need you showing your friends my fat rolls, she threw her words at him like it was prediction rather than a statement.

Honey, I would never do that, Craig frowned in between his kisses. I think you’re absolutely sexy, his tongue slipped out of his mouth to lick the pale skin on her neck.

Every time she was naked around him her self-esteem seemed to crash in a downward spiral. She couldn’t help comparing herself to his past girlfriends who were skinnier and prettier than she was.

Those eyes of yours are like an endless green sea, I just can’t stop looking into them, he smiled, caressing her cheek. Besides, my opinion is the only one that should matter right?

Um, no, she said flatly and jumped out of the bed, disregarding Craig’s obvious attempt at morning sex.

You know what Katie? Craig jumped up from the bed. You can have it your way then. I’m tired of trying to get you to see how beautiful you are.

Whatever, Katie mumbled as she covered herself up with a robe.

It’s pathetic that you can’t get enough self-esteem to make yourself feel good, especially when I’m always telling you it, he rambled on as he started to dress for the day.

There’s no possible way I can be all these things that you say about me Craig, Katie felt the tears starting to well up.

Craig stopped getting ready and walked over to her, putting both his hands on her shoulders.

I can’t be with someone who doesn’t love themselves. You’re depressing to be around, he frowned as he spoke the words she knew were true.

Whenever I have something good to say about you, you put it down. I want to be able to compliment my woman and hear a thank you, or a cocky ‘I know’ or some kind of response that lets me know my woman is confident, he tried to explain, but she knew she could never be that.

He was going to leave and she knew it. It had to happen sooner or later, she thought. They all run from her. Who wouldn’t? He was right, she was pathetic and ugly. She couldn’t look at herself in the mirror without seeing the whole 180lbs that clung to her pale skin as ugly.

Katie, you need to figure yourself out, he shook his head and walked out of the room.

Katie followed him into the living room where he picked up his bag that he always brought with him when he visited her.

I’m sorry I can’t wait around while you do that. I want to live and be happy, Craig finished as he walked out the door without a glance.

What a fantastic way to start the morning, Katie
