Leaving Time explores love, loss and motherhood through the eyes of 13-year-old Jenna Metcalf, her mother Alice and the elephants Alice studies. The way that the elephants cherish each other, in love and death, contrasts starkly with the human failings that rip apart Jenna’s world.

Jenna has searched for Alice since the night, ten years ago, Nevvie Ruehl was found trampled at the Metcalf family’s elephant sanctuary in rural New Hampshire. Nevvie worked there with her daughter and son-in-law, Grace and Gideon Cartwright. That night, Alice was found lying on the ground unconscious. She was taken to the hospital and left before anyone could talk to her.

Jenna consults a psychic, Serenity Jones, who has been faking her psychic ability since losing her powers. However, she manages to find Alice’s wallet at the former sanctuary, which is now a nature park. Jenna tries to take it to the police detective, Virgil Stanhope, who handled the case, but is told he died. She finds Stanhope online where he advertises himself as a private investigator. He feels Alice’s case was not handled properly. For this reason, he agrees to help Jenna.
