    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The concepts outlined in this book represent the work of many people over many years. While these individuals are too numerous to acknowledge all by name, I would like to particularly thank some key individuals who have led much of this effort.

Much of the research that forms the basis of this book and its companion book, High Performance Health, was performed at Rippe Lifestyle Institute and Rippe Lifestyle Institute of Florida under the able direction of my great friend and colleague Ted Angelopoulos, Ph.D., MPH. He is ably assisted by Linda Zukley, Ph.D., CCRN, who serves as the Associate Director of Research at RLI. Ted and Linda lead a large group of extremely dedicated and energetic exercise physiologists, nutritionists, nurses, physicians, and support personnel who conduct world class research every day.

A number of the clinical insights, which form the basis for this book as well as High Performance Health, come from my clinical facility, Rippe Health Assessment at Florida Hospital Celebration Health. The clinical team at RHA is led by Drs. Sherry Brooks, Sheri Novenstern, and Christine Edwards, as well as our Clinic Director, Herminio Alamo, MHA, RN. The clinicians who deliver great patient care every day at Rippe Health Assessment have provided key insights that led to the formulation many of the concepts in this workbook.

I have also been blessed to lead an academic effort at the University of Central Florida to establish the Center for Lifestyle Medicine at UCF. This would not have been possible without the strong support of the President of UCF, my friend and colleague Dr. John Hitt and the Provost of UCF, Dr. Terry Hickey.

The wonderful editorial team at Thomas Nelson, under the direction of Pamela Clements, has supported this and many other writing projects over the last two years. I would also like to acknowledge and thank my literary agent for this project, Lee Hough, who always provides great help and insight. Todd Chobotar, Director of Publishing and Creative Projects at Florida Hospital, has provided support and advice.

All of my writing projects are directed by my superb Editorial Director, Elizabeth Grady, who continues to amaze me with her organizational skills, good humor, and competence. Mary Abbott Waite, Ph.D., provided excellent editorial help on my previous book, High Performance Health, upon which this workbook is based. I would also like to particularly thank and acknowledge the excellent editorial work performed on the workbook manuscript by Steve Halliday.

My executive assistant, Carol Moreau, helps create time for these projects by managing my complex schedule. Carol does this with a very high level of caring, performance, and skill. Becky Cotton Hess, my executive assistant at Rippe Lifestyle Institute of Florida, performs similar duties flawlessly in Florida. My assistant at the University of Central Florida and coordinator for the Center for Lifestyle Medicine at UCF, Debbie Rhodes, also does a wonderful job.

I would also like to acknowledge and thank the thousand of patients and research subjects who have come through Rippe Lifestyle Institute and Rippe Health Assessment over the past two decades. Their stories and the insights that I have learned from working with them are peppered throughout this book.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge my dear wife, Stephanie Hart Rippe, who inspires me every day to be my best and to take time to stop and smell the roses as I juggle my way through a complex and busy life. She has been my soul mate and partner on this wonderful journey. Our four fantastic daughters, Hart, Jaelin, Devon, and Jamie continue to amaze me as they grow into wonderful young women. These five women together comprise the Rippe Women and bring more joy and meaning into my life than I ever thought possible.
