    Chapter One

Understanding the Nature of the Ego

    Defining the Ego

It would be impossible to define the ego in a way that everyone can relate, accept, and agree. The very nature of the ego is to judge everything it sees, hears, and reads. It is constantly accepting or rejecting everything that comes across the conscious and subconscious minds. In other words, as I embark on this journey to introduce you to the inner workings of the ego, your own ego will be on the ready to accept or reject everything I write. My best advice is to be wide open to anything, be attached to nothing, and remain as curious as possible.

There are many definitions, ideas, and opinions about how to define the ego. The Latin word ego translates into English as I. In this world of contrast, identifying with our ego is a way for our minds to grasp an understanding of who we think we are in contrast to others and/or the world. It is our perceived relationship to our personal identity or self.

I appreciate how spiritual teacher and author Adyashanti describes the ego as not a thing but a verb. He talks about our ego or sense of self as a construct formed out of our ideas, beliefs, and images of who we think we are; the key word being think. Our minds create and accept a version of who we think we are. Any version of ourselves that we form in our minds is a limited version of Self and is not the Truth of who we are.

In his book The End of Your World: Uncensored Straight Talk on the Nature of Enlightenment, Adyashanti explains: What we call ego is simply the mechanism our mind uses to resist life as it is. In that way, ego isn’t a thing as much as it is a verb. It is the resistance to what is. It is the pushing away or pulling toward. This momentum, this grasping and rejecting, is what forms a sense of a self that is distinct, or separate, from the world around us.

Who are we in this world without our sense of self? What is the role our mind is meant to play in our everyday lives? What is the purpose of our ego?

I believe the ego serves a purpose in our lives until one day it doesn’t. The challenge is when that day comes, the ego rejects the idea that it no longer serves a purpose and highjacks our mind convincing us that we can’t live without it. As we begin to explore the nature of the ego and understand the evolution of the ego and lengths it will go to survive and convince us we need it at all costs, we can begin to shift the role it plays in our minds and the influence it has in our lives.

The Nature of the Ego Is Fear

The ego is our greatest teacher of fear. The ego is capable of providing us with the deepest experiences and most intimate relationship with fear we could ever encounter. The ego knows fear inside and out. It is a master teacher of fear.

I often teach that we have two teachers within. Our ego is our teacher of fear and Spirit is our teacher of love. In every moment we are listening to one of our two teachers. In every moment we are either choosing love or fear. This can happen consciously, but more commonly it occurs unconsciously. Imagine a light switch that can turn on our choice for ego or turn on our connection to Spirit. In each moment, it can only be turned on to one or the other, love or fear.

Fear is a huge driving force in our life. We are born to love, we are programmed to fear. We are taught to use fear to make decisions. We are told to be careful, to watch out, to fear the unknown, to worry about what others will think; we are taught to live in fear in every moment.

Our true nature is love. Our true essence is love. We are meant to be a unique expression of our shared source of love, yet we are programmed to fear love. In other words we are taught to fear our true Self, our true nature, our essence.

The ego thrives in our society because our society is based on a foundation of fear. Our ego is fed a healthy dose of fear on a daily basis. We can turn in any direction at any time and find examples of fear surrounding us. We are bombarded with messages of fear. We are programmed to align with fear. It is easy to get on the fear train and join in the conversations and complaining that go on around
