    * Featured Scriptures

    ** Used twice

Step One: We admit we are powerless over our dependencies, that our lives have become unmanageable.

Admitting powerlessness is a must in order to break the cycle of addiction. The admission of powerlessness over an addiction becomes the foundation for strength to eventually recover.

    *Romans 7:18–20

    *Matthew 9:36

    *Psalm 6:2–4

Step Two: Come to believe that a power greater than ourselves can restore us to sanity.

In Step One, powerlessness over one’s dependencies and the unmanageability of life was admitted. This next step seeks a new source of strength/power to take charge of us in order to make us sane, healed, and whole.

    *Mark 9:23–24

    *Luke 13:10–13

Step Three: Decide to turn our will and lives over to the care of God.

After admitting powerlessness in Step One and coming to believe in a power (God) in Step Two that can help restore all we lost, in Step Three we must decide whether we are willing to turn our will and lives to God to lead and guide.

    *Matthew 16:21–26

    *Matthew 11:28–30

    *Psalm 23

    *Proverbs 3:5–6

Step Four: Make a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

A personal inventory is a must at this point to help us understand and take ownership of our mistakes, shortcomings, and sins. This inventory needs to come from our life story, which helps us to honestly evaluate our past. This we prepare in writing and present to another individual in private for assistance, with the both of us being led by the Word of God. The inventory will look at our lives in the areas of who or what had we harmed, feared, resent, or even committed bad/sinful acts of sexual conduct with or against. Scripture shows that God shows compassion on those who follow this humble, honest process of taking full responsibility for their sins.

    *Romans 13:11–14

    **1 Corinthians 4:19–21

    *Galatians 6:3–5

Step Five: Admit to God, to ourselves, and another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

This is what some term as one of the hardest steps to take due to having to reveal deep, dark secrets to someone else. On the upside, it is rewarding in the sense of relief from what we saw as a hopeless condition, which we have now attempt to handle with help and sound direction. In this step, we need to acknowledge all our addictions and wrongs that we have committed in all our relationships, ways we have affected others while acting out in our addictions, how we have wronged family members, and how we have wronged ourselves.

    *Proverbs 28:13–14

    *Luke 15:17–20

    *Hebrews 4:12–16

    *1 John 1:8–9

Step Six: We are entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

Step Six is where we become willing to have God remove all things that have been a problem or sinful in our lives. We must realize that God can, and is willing to, remove all these problems/sins from our lives if we are willing to have him do so.

    *Psalm 119:28–40

    *Colossians 3:5–8

Step Seven: Humbly ask God to remove our shortcomings.

Steps six and seven overlap in order to emphasize our need for God to remove our character defects. Step Six focuses on willingness to yield our flaws to God, while Step Seven centers on being humble with our approach to him. We must not confuse humility with humiliation. God does not want to mortify us. He wants us to submit to him.

    *Acts 3:19, 1 Peter 5:6–7

    *1 John 5:14–15

Step Eight: Make a list of all persons we have harmed and become willing to make amends to them all.

Who should be on this list? The list should be compiled from our fourth step inventory. The list should
