Festive Fix: The Magic of Passion
Natasha Duncan-Drake
BARNABY SHOULD HAVE BEEN LOOKING where he was going. Usually, he could read and walk and still be aware of his surroundings. It was the kind of skill one picked up after eight hundred years. But his book had just reached the exciting climax and he might have become just a tad overinvolved. Walking slap bang into some other poor soul was unfortunately inevitable.
Oh, crap,
he heard someone say as their bodies collided and his book went one way and their phone the other.
Luckily his reflexes were still on point. He caught the phone with his left hand and his book with his right.
I am so sorry,
he started to apologise at exactly the same time another voice began something similar.
He looked up and found himself staring into the most beautiful eyes he had ever seen.
Are you alright?
the other man asked. I really am sorry, I got lost in my book.
Barnaby mentally kicked himself to try and get his thoughts to move again.
You have the most amazing eyes,
were the words that came out of his mouth.
Eight hundred years of practice and the best he could do was blurt exactly what he was thinking at a complete stranger. He was pathetic.
And me too,
he managed to add, waving his book. I must apologise as well. I believe this is yours.
For a second the man he had accidentally assaulted didn't seem to know what to say, but he accepted his phone back.
Thank you,
he said. You have remarkable reflexes.
A misspent youth,
Barnaby said and smiled.
The other man laughed, a short bark as he put his phone in his pocket. Barnaby had the most peculiar feeling in his chest, all fluttery and light. He wondered if the bagel he had just eaten was disagreeing with him. Then he felt it, the itch between his shoulder blades that was always a harbinger of something important. Eloise had always joked it was where his wings should have been.
I do hope I have not terribly inconvenienced you,
he said. These back streets are so rarely travelled that sometimes I forget they are not my domain alone.
His companion looked around.
If I'm honest,
he said, I have no idea where I've ended up. I like to read and walk sometimes and I just follow my nose. My GPS gets used quite a lot.
While Barnaby knew what GPS was, he did not currently own a phone. His friends tended to despair of him, but he just hadn't got round to it.
Most useful,
was the best he could do. "I have lived
