Chapter 1
An Unexpected Misfortune
VAMPIRE HUNTER WAS NOT A CAREER Hades had chosen. It was more he had fallen into it. Sometimes he regretted his life choices.
Taking six bullets to the chest had not been part of his plan for the evening, but then a lot lately seemed to be going that way.
This was supposed to have been an easy target. A club where vampires hung out in small numbers. Hades had gone in as the scout, given that he could spot a vampire at twenty paces. Once upon a time he’d been a normal human, oblivious to the dark underworld that carried on in the shadows. He’d had a different name, a normal job, and a family.
Kidnapped, used as a blood donor, kept alive by small amounts of vampire blood. It had changed him. He’d been only just the right side of alive when he’d been rescued. Recovery had been long and hard, but it had left him with a few advantages. Like his sensitivity to the undead.
He’d gone up to the huge vampire he’d seen sitting alone at the bar, and started to flirt, while making sure to scan the whole place with the camera on his lapel. His team had had no plans to raid the bar or anything stupid like that. Their MO was to scout and pick off vamps after they left. However, ending up in the middle of a vampire squabble had sent those plans completely south.
That was how Hades had ended up lying on his back trying to convince his lungs that air was better than blood.
Bullets didn’t kill vampires, but they hurt like hell, did kill human hangers on, and made a point. Clearly one group of bloodsuckers was sending a message to another, and unfortunately, Hades had been right in the path of their chosen method. He’d never been shot before, and frankly, it was an experience he would much rather have skipped.
He hadn’t tasted blood that clearly since he’d been a blood donor slave, and he knew that was bad. The world was swirling in his vision, so he squeezed his eyes shut.
Don’t die on me,
were the words that brought him back from the edge.
Opening his eyes in shock he stared up to
