    The Warmth of Blood

We all fear the cold. When we feel the bone deep, aching chill we know it's time. There's nothing to be done but drown it out with the fierce warmth of human life.

MIKE, HANNA Frank greeted as he threw open the door, you made it.

Of course we made it, Mike said, dragging Frank into a brotherly hug. You think we'd miss the ten year reunion of the class to end all classes?

Well when you put it like that, Frank said and gave Hanna a kiss on the cheek.

It seemed like yesterday they were all at uni making merry hell; he could barely believe it had been ten years. Of course he had had to organise a party when he had realised the significance.

Hey, James, the love birds are here, he called.

Mike and Hanna were the love story of their group. The pair had met in their first year and married after they finished their third. They had been together ever since.

Drinks, James said, poking his head in from the living room.

The rest of him appeared a moment later carrying two glasses of champagne.

For Madame and for Monsieur, James said and presented the drinks with a flourish.

Glad to see you haven't changed a bit, Jimmy, Hanna said and laughed.

I would never, Jimmy said, people might die of shock.

The world would come to an end, Frank added.

Come on, everyone else is out by the pool, James said, linking arms with Hanna and almost spilling her drink.

The pool, in this weather? Mike asked.

We've had it glassed in since you were last here, James said, and it's covered over anyway. Frank here demanded a dance floor for this weekend.

I did nothing of the sort, Frank countered, I simply asked. You were the one who insisted on the famous club DJ who stormed off after ten minutes when you disparaged his entire playlist.

James shrugged in a very unrepentant manner.

It was all techno shit, he said. Our lot do not dance to techno shit.

    That was true.

Frank may have organised the party, but there had been only one place they could hold it: Beechams Hall. James was a trust fund baby who had more money than sense, but he was generous to a fault. All of them had spent holidays at James' family home while they were at uni and several of them since too. James had shown up on Frank's doorstep the day his divorce was finalised and taken him on a trip to Dubai to get over his heartbreak. That was the sort of person James was.

That was everyone and Frank followed his friend out towards the back of the house. It took them a little while: it was a huge house.

The stragglers have arrived, Dave crowed from where he was bending over a laptop picking some new music.

Now the party can really start, Becky added and saluted everyone entering with her glass.

It was only filled with orange juice because the big shock of the evening, at least as far as Frank had been concerned, was that Becky was heavily pregnant. He hadn't had a clue, even though he kept in contact with the whole group via social media all the time. Given the way Hanna's eyes
