Later, introduce Barbara Cartland and the world of romance fiction.Get her a teaching job or two in authentic, one room Montana schools, ala Laura Ingels Wilder.Marry her off to a great guy, move her to a big city in Tornado Alley, then pop three daughters out of her in twenty-two months (one set of identical twins). Then, make her a jinx. Every great genre TV show she loves gets the ax: Beauty and the Beast, Dark Angel—and Buffy and Spike NEVER have a happy ending! She gets upset about no romance in the world and fires up to write her own stories with happy endings.Throw this all together into a small house in Wyoming, along with a small bouncy dog named Baxter and too many cats, shake constantly and pour it out onto a computer keyboard. There! The coven, know for inept spell casting, bungles a spell that unleashes white-hot passion between the two fighters. The couple decides to have secret affair. They knew the affair was forbidden, they didn’t know it could be deadly.

The short story Ritual of Fire and Ice takes place in the years between chapter three and chapter four of this story.

    Chapter One

    Ten years ago

Savaj hadn't rested in days. An eternity of days. He was so tired he could barely contain the demon as he rushed to his loft. Bourbon and blood. Lots of bourbon. Human blood, even though she assumed he drank pig's blood. Which was a fantasy of the covens. Real vampires needed real human blood. Ethically sourced human blood, from volunteers, of course. Who could object to that?

Tonight he would gorge himself on fine booze and blood and come daylight he would rest. Real rest, none of the dream-filled crap he'd had since that encounter— almost like human sleep. Spell damage.

Awful, mismanaged coven! Desires Realized Spell. He was sure they’d done it for money. The local coven was a menace. Inept leadership allowing witches with actual power to run amok in the community. But he and Luna had no financial concerns, so the spell had veered into other areas.

A fancy name for an invasive lust spell. Curse.

His bad luck, coming afoul of a lust spell. With a woman who could kill him in under ten seconds.

Flashes of dreams, recurrent, constant, came to mind as he rushed toward the bar. Silken arms around his neck. Wet and so, so tight, so hot, her pussy, clamped around his finger. They kissed on the couch— and more— when her elderly high priest was in the kitchen, high on pain killers. She had welcomed his probing, grinding against him. And that whimper. God, how could he forget that?

Christ, the spell was over. Wasn't it?

The state of his pants told him it wasn't over.

Or else a bond had formed. He didn’t want to explore that thought.

His memory pulled him to other thoughts...her little titties, nipples so hard. He'd peaked down her shirt while alone on the couch, seen her lacy bra and then those small pink nipples. Luna Parker, Warrior Witch, was forbidden to one such as he. But that didn't mean he didn't want her.

He remembered their make-out session so clearly. Professor Martin, none the wiser, sitting in his recliner in his study, with tea and some classic book. Old Marty was high as a kite, with the brace tight around his neck, eyes black from bruising. A mild concussion. While Savaj slathered demon impurities all over the blessed Warrior Witch, as fast and as far as he could, Marty had drifted out of reality, leaving Savaj and Luna some privacy.

And there she was. Brown braid flying as she fought a couple of clumsy vampires accompanied by pet baby Slashgut demons. Not ten yards from his loft.

He had the worst luck of any vampire he knew.

Except maybe Clumsy Vampire Number One, who was now dust. That was pretty unlucky. Savaj grinned.

A little Slashgut leapt out at Luna, venomous saliva dripping from jagged teeth.

What the hell? It had her! He dropped his bag onto the sidewalk, and with a possessive roar, rushed to her aide.

His stupid inner demon counted Luna as his, since that lust spell, even though he had tried to educate it. Mine, rang through his brain.

He was going to rip that demon part with his bare hands.

The knife in his shoulder was a surprise. Clutzy Vampire Number Three, who he hadn’t seen, got him. Must have thought he was human. Savaj laughed. Nice one. I think I'll keep it.

Luna killed the Slashgut demon with her silver-tipped sword. She leaped to him and managed to yank the knife out in one graceful move. She tossed it to him, and he took care of Clutzy Vampire Number Three.

Clumsy Vampire Number Two and the remaining fledglings team-tackled Luna.

Clumsy Number Two went in for the neck bite. Before he could make it deadly, Savaj got the vamp with a big bite to the neck. He wanted to taste the blood to make sure it wasn't a group of Montague Clan vampires on the loose. It wasn't, just some random rogue, only a few hours old. Savaj turned it to dust.

Luna got one of the fledgling Slashguts with her silver sword, poison to demonkind. The other ran, but Savaj chased it and killed it with his sturdy new knife.

When all the trouble was dead in the street, they stood, staring at each other. Both of them were stanching blood with their fingers.

What the hell happened here? Luna asked, in her irritated, bitchy way. In the street light glow, her blue-gray eyes flashed with that light that signified fury. But underneath he could hear her confusion.

My loft, he growled, grabbing her by the arm. She came, not resisting, pausing with him as he picked up his cloth sack.

You’re environmentally aware? She asked in a snippy voice.

He couldn't shake the demon, not with her blood present. It was all he could do not to sink his fangs over the shallow gash the rogue vampire had managed, and make his own claim. He growled. Smooth.

Luna noticed his fangs when they got into his loft. Thankfully, she didn't notice the rock in his pants. Savaj, suck up your fangs, she whined, in her demanding way.

Can't, he growled. Your blood...turns me on.

Shit! Had he said that out loud? Christ, he was asking to be dusted! And she had a stake right in her belt, and a silver sword! He flopped onto his couch, and rested his head in his hands, defeated. "Stupid ass," he told his inner demon.

She had seen his pants— he saw where her eyes flicked.

    You want to bite me?

One bite. Did he sound like he was begging? One bite, to cover that bastard's. One taste. Then I can stop the bleeding. And shake off the fangs.

Would it hurt? Would you stop? I have no desire to be a vampire.

Is she considering it? He nearly came in his pants at the thought.

Wouldn't hurt. You'd feel pressure. Pleasure, too. Some kind of vampire survival thing, makes it pleasant for the bitten.  I'd stop. Don't want you dead. The demon doesn't want you dead.

Why not? she sank down next to him on the couch. He could feel her thundering heart rate, smell her arousal. His mouth watered. He handed her a box of tissues and grabbed some himself. Neither of them had a serious injury.

"Cuz the demon wants to fuck you over and over. With you... participating. Can't do that if you're
