Poetry Treasures - Volume Three and Four - Debbie Brewer

Poetry Treasures - Volumes Three & Four

    Poems by

    Debbie Brewer

    Prologue

    Dear reader and poetry lover.

These littles rhymes were inspired by the world around us.

I hope these poems are so much more than just rhyming ditties,

inviting even the least poetic of us to take enjoyment from these pages.

    Bluebells in the springtime

    Brown leaves in the fall

    A summer full of roses

    Winter snow upon the wall

    Seasons ever turning

    Never will they slow

Thank each new day you’re blessed with

And each new one yet to know

    Acknowledgements

With thanks to my mother for passing on her rhyming flair,

my father for his great spelling and grammar genes,

and my husband for his patience when I am in my poetic zone

Dedicated to my children, Ben and Samantha

    Volume Three

    Friday 13th

    Friday 13th, unlucky for some

    Weird superstitions are scary

They reckon that anything odd can go wrong

So please do attempt to be wary.

Glance out of the window and see a black cat

    Bad omens have started already

Then under a ladder you fatefully step

Get a grip now, just keep your mind steady.

The salt has been spilt as I’m eating my lunch

Which shoulder has it got to go?

I’m panicking now, I remember not

So over both shoulders I throw.

Don’t break a mirror or unhappy times

Will be with you for seven years long

Open an umbrella while still indoors

And something will surely go wrong.

I’m not superstitious, at least that’s what I say

But bad luck please don’t rain on me

So just in case there’s truth in this fateful day

    I’ll tackle my day carefully!

    Velvet

When the world’s a whirling whirlpool, pace of life is just too fast

You yearn to find yourself a space where chaotic noise is sparse

When all around you bustles and your mind is frantic clutter

The voices in your head won’t cease, a constant background mutter

You struggle to breathe slowly but an ache stays in your head

And people near you need to keep their endless questions fed

Your heartbeat feels unsteady, pulsing loud and slightly fast

    Your breathing rate
