Chapter One: Who’s Your Date?

Okay, we’re on in ten, people, a voice announces through speakers in the studio.  Let’s get everything ready to go. 

I turn to look at the host of the show, Lawson Turner, and smile.  Here we go again, huh?

Yeah, show two-forty-nine.  I have worked with the middle-aged television personality for the last three years on Who’s Your Date, and it has been a whirlwind of success for us as well as the television network for which we have been filming. 

Let’s go give the old pep talk, alright?  I wave Lawson toward one side of the stage where a young man is sitting in a chair.  The makeup artist is applying the last touch of makeup to his young face as we approach.  Charlie, we have met already, but I’m Brandon Knighten, the director and executive producer of the show and this is the show’s host, Lawson Turner. 

He reaches out and shakes our hands.  Yeah, I remember you.  Swallowing hard, he continues, This is surreal, you know?  I’m about to be on live television and I just hope I don’t puke all over the stage.

Lawson chuckles as he looks nervously at the man.  We have had a few others to vomit on stage before, but most of the time that has happened during commercials or just before the show.  Just take deep breaths when you can, alright?  The questions are on the cue cards in your hands.

Charlie looks down at the index cards in his hands.  I didn’t think that you guys would actually let me ask my own questions.

We always let our men ask their questions, so long as they are the sort of questions that won’t get us in trouble with the FCC or the studio executives.  Of course, we tweak them a little to make them a bit more palatable to the audience, I tell him.  You need to stick to those questions as well as to comments that aren’t offensive in general.  We are going to be live on the east coast, but thankfully we will be able to edit anything that hops out unexpectedly for the rest of the country.  It is my hope that Charlie will take this as a calming thought since he will not be live before the entire country all at once. 

He nods his head.  I’ll try to keep what I say a little cleaner than usual.

Four minutes, the same voice from earlier suddenly says from the speakers mounted high on the walls. 

Well, here we go.  I smile at the young man before turning to walk with Lawson back toward his position on the stage.

The host shakes his head as we approach a podium.  I’m not sure he can make it through, Brandon.  That kid is looking a little too green.

I pat the older man on the shoulder.  He’ll be just fine.  Once things are rolling along, Charlie will fall right into the role and find a young woman for a nice date.

Lawson smiles.  He pukes.  I have ten bucks on that.  And it won’t be during a commercial, Brandon.  That kid is going to pop while on stage.

Raising an eyebrow, I reach out to shake the host’s hand.  You’re on.  I’ll expect that ten note on my desk by the end of the day.

And I’ll expect it in my pocket before then as well.  Lawson has been a host on television of one sort or another for the last twenty years.  He is good at his job and has an uncanny knack to read others and to direct a program toward a ratings-winning conclusion.  It is because of this fact that I suddenly wish I had not taken him up on the bet.

One minute.  I nod my head as I look at the row of windows behind the audience seating high up in the studio.  Though I am the show’s director, I tend to stay out of the control room during the actual filming of the program.  It helps me to be more on top of whatever is happening with our young man and the three women he will be choosing from for his date.

Five, four, three, two, one...  I drop my hand to give the signal to
