An excerpt from Girl Genes:

Oh, Lee said. She realized that Joey would not know anything about the morning’s events or her little adventure with Mona the Cute Sales Girl. I went to the department store this morning, and there was this girl who invited me out to a club with her and her friends. I needed clothes but had no idea what to pick out. She was really sweet and helpful. And by the end, she'd given me a makeover. Lee gestured to her outfit and waved her hands around her face animatedly. So I agreed to go.

Joey was watching her with some amusement. Uh-huh. I see.

So, will you go?

I mean, I’m happy to help you, Lee. On one condition. Joey spared Lee the precious minutes of wondering what on earth he could want and getting mad that he'd want something from her in exchange for helping her by continuing quickly. I want to come with you to the club.

Oh, Lee thought. Of course. That made sense.

Joey had never been to a club. He may have been a good-looking guy, and Lee knew that he had picked up plenty of girls, but he was the kind of guy who found them at the local supermarket or gym. It wasn't like there was anything wrong with that, but Lee had never been to a club either, and he was pretty excited about it. It might be nice to have a fellow nerd around.

Then again, having Joey around may make Lee nervous. But she really wanted to reverse the transformation, and the only way she could do that was if Joey agreed to help her. She wasn't about to waste time arguing about it.

Well, what do you say? Joey asked, breaking into her thoughts.

Um… I have to check with Mona, okay?

Sure, go for it.

Lee's phone was sitting on the coffee table. She grabbed it and started texting Mona. She'd barely made her way back to the breakfast nook when Mona replied.

Well, Mona says it's okay, Lee said reluctantly. So, I guess you're going clubbing tonight.

She was busy texting Mona back when her knee knocked against Joey’s. She looked over the top of the screen down at his leg. He was wearing a pair of jeans, and the fabric felt rough against her bare skin. Her frilly black skirt had ridden up so high, almost her entire smooth, toned thighs were revealed. Her nerves tingled.

Lee was slow to look up from the phone. She could feel tension sparking in the air like electricity, and her breathing a little heavier than it was before. The second her eyes met Joey’s, Lee’s phone fell from her hand. The hunger from earlier was still in his eyes, but it had become more intense. Desire shot straight to her core, hot and hard. The phone clattered to the ground between them, but the sound was lost as Joey’s hands clasped her waist, and nothing else mattered but the feel of his touch. He pulled her towards him, right off the seat and into his lap.

There was a small voice in the back of her mind telling her that this was not normal, that it wasn't right. She ignored that voice. It was far softer than the lust-filled one that demanded attention. Every inch of her was on fire, and she was powerless to resist it.

Joey’s lips crashed into Lee’s. He kissed her passionately, his mouth moved, and hers opened to allow his tongue to slip into it. She moaned at the feeling, giving into it. Her body bowed against his, and he suddenly stood up. His hands were on her ass cheeks, lifting her with him. He hoisted her onto the countertop and set her down.

She only broke away from his mouth to moan as she felt his hands sneaking around to her front. They were big and strong. They slid to her legs and massaged up to her thighs; Lee opened her legs. Before she knew it, her lacy black thong was being shifted to one side…

Chapter 1

Goal! Joey yelled and threw his controller-holding hands up into the air in victory. Got you again, mate. The next round is on you.

Lee rolled his eyes and put his controller down. He got off the couch and made his way over to the small bar fridge in the kitchen. He chose two bottles of beer from the large selection of booze and cracked them open–a satisfying hiss of air followed. Joey cheered and whooped as the team on the screen danced and gave each other high fives on the football field. It was his third win of the day–putting him one game ahead of Lee.

There was no way he was going to let Lee live that down.

With an exasperated sigh, Lee handed his friend a beer. Yeah, yeah. Here you go.

Joey grinned over at him. Don't be so sore. It’s not my fault I’m better at this than you are.

Lee laughed and took a swig from his beer. Okay, you’re only one match ahead of me. Calm down.

Joey opened his mouth, ready with a response, but was interrupted by his phone buzzing on the coffee table in the center of the room. He picked it up to check the caller ID. Sorry, I have to take this. It’s work.

No problem, Lee said.

Joey nodded and took both his phone and beer out onto Lee’s patio. He shut the sliding door. Lee could barely hear his muffled tones as he answered the call. He knew what it was like when it came to work. Most of his own time was dedicated to the job; nothing less was to be expected, considering their line of work and the complexities that came with it.

Lee and Joey worked together, though in different departments. They were, in layman’s terms, gene editors. More specifically, Lee coded models for new applications of CRISPR–Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats–genomic editing. CRISPR was a family of patterns and sequences in the genetic material of bacteria and microbes. His company patented and marketed them to make people smarter, stronger, and faster. There was a lot that could be done once you got down to the base nature of molecular biology
