In The Beginning

The message in Genesis 1:1 in the Old Testament is a reassuring story designed to set one at ease about our origins. It is mostly a harmless message written by ancient people who knew very little about our true beginnings. Like many explanations in ancient religious texts, assumptions are made using common-sense observations and then a story is created with the causation of the events originating with a God or Gods. Anything mysterious...a God did it. This is a very easy, some say cowardly, way to get out of the work one must perform to find the truth of reality. This approach certainly leaves no room for the patience or humility needed to discover the evidence.

Without completely discarding the message of Genesis 1:1, we can simply expand the meaning of the word “God” to include the scientific evidence that explains “how” these things happened. Life has always been about building on the work of others. Life has always been about building on the work of others. Of course, the Cosmos was not created in six earth days as we know by the evidence found within the fossil record, radio-carbon dating, and other discoveries such as red-shift or the doppler effect, or the words written within the genome. Furthermore, the message within this metaphor does not clearly state that the events happened according to Earth days. This may have been an ancient style of writing where days were used to indicate cycles, phases, or milestones. Fortunately, we now have a better understanding of life’s origins and it goes like this... In the beginning, a mysterious source of energy violently broke free from total darkness and emptiness. This event was the physical origin of all life as we know it.
