About this ebook

Now... or later? Why you almost allowed yourself to reach the point of no return...

Are you familiar with the vicious cycle where you keep distracting yourself with anything and everything, just to keep your mind off the important things that actually need to get done?

Have you ever wanted your work to be so perfect that you became overwhelmed by how much effort it would require and kept putting it off until it was too late?

Have you ever wanted something so badly, but then you stopped dead in your tracks when you started thinking about how long it would take to accomplish it? The goal seemed too far away to feel real and meaningful...

If you answered 'yes' to any of the above questions, then you might have fallen into the mischievous trap that is procrastination.

You may have called yourself lazy, blamed your poor results on circumstance and lack of time, but what you may have failed to realize is that blame only gets you so far…

Understanding the real reasons behind procrastination can be an elusive process, but well worth the effort nonetheless. Not only will it help you become more productive, but it will also allow you to realize that your behavior is not as black and white and that there's more than what meets the eye.

20% of the world population is known to procrastinate, and 64% of those people have admitted that procrastination has had very harsh to extreme negative effects on their lives and wellbeing.

However, as you arm yourself with necessary knowledge and an arsenal of tools to master your emotions, you can stop procrastination in its track and achieve goals you never thought possible.

In Samurai Self Discipline, you will discover:

  • How to indefinitely halt the vicious cycle of procrastination through a real understanding of its mechanisms
  • The hidden link between procrastination and self-worth, and how a small change of perspective can increase your performance tenfold
  • Why procrastination is a maladaptive coping mechanism, yet how you can make work for you rather than against you
  • How you can turn passive procrastination into a more positive delaying mechanism that is surprisingly helpful and healthy
  • The 6 reasons why you can't get yourself to be productive (even when you want to) and how to fight them
  • The life-changing secrets of the PURRRR protocol, and what you've been missing all this time in order to make fast, easy changes in your habits today
  • The unsuspected connection between perfectionism and procrastination, and why this matters in the bigger picture of your productivity

And much more.

You might be tempted to tell yourself that you'll deal with this later, but there's no right moment for change.

Now is better than later, because all what later really is… is a recipe for even more procrastination.

To get things done, you need to start somewhere, anywhere.

Even if you might not meet your own standards for success, a slight change of perspective is the key to breaking away from the clutches of that procrastination demon and leading a healthy, more productive life.

If you want to start making deadlines in time, all while feeling good about it, then purchase this ebook right away.

    Introduction

"I am a person who works well under pressure. In fact, I work so well under pressure that at times, I will procrastinate in order to create this pressure."—Stephanie Pearl-McPhee

When we refer to the term ‘procrastination,’ we do not refer to a specific type of individual. Procrastination affects everyone, young and old, successful and to-be-successful, doctors and gardeners. We are faced with instances that hamper our productivity, even when we know what tasks we should be doing. Many of you who have picked up this book may feel depressed, tired, anxious and stressed about deadlines that you feel you cannot meet. Most of you may even have done a quick Google search on self-help methods to stop procrastination, as well as how to deal with the constant streams of emotional negativity that accompany procrastination. These instances may have even affected your personal image, making others deem you to be unreliable and to an extent incompetent. However, you know that there is something deeper at play regarding what is causing you to procrastinate, and this is what we are going to tackle, together.

This book is going to get to the core of the emotions, physical effects, and productivity issues that you may be facing, focusing on what is leading you to procrastinate. We will delve into what the term ‘procrastination’ means, what it entails, the psychology behind it, and the superficial and deep detriments that are associated with the term. We will provide you with tools to search for the root causes of your procrastination, as well as aid you in not only establishing a sense of productive well-being, but boosting your mental health and diminishing any internal and external thoughts that may harbor your productivity and ability to meet your deadlines.

You are going to learn to overcome obstacles, both current and future, and even figure out ways to deal with those of the past. You will understand that you are not alone in wanting everything to be perfect, and that there are negative mental health effects associated with this. There is no better way to solidify this concept than with a real-life story of someone who suffers from procrastination, allowing us to see the effects it has had on their mind and body:

I’ve been labeled to be a typical Type A personality, where everything needs to be perfect. I needed to get straight As, be the best in every class, because that is how I was going to succeed in this world. However, it would give me sleepless nights, hours of constant worrying, and depressed moods when I would achieve 96% for an exam instead of 100%. I felt like my life needed to be perfect. I started researching procrastination because that is what it felt like. I would spend so much of my mental capacity on worrying about what the future held for me, whether I would get that job promotion I applied for, and thinking about why I couldn’t perform at the level that I know I am capable of. So much so, that the worry and feelings of inadequacy started to impede on not only the amount of work that I had done, but also the quality of that work. I felt hopeless because no matter how much research I did, the recommendations remained the same: Sleep more (which is the worst phrase you can ever tell someone with a Type A personality), eat less but healthier, and allow yourself the space to not always perform at your best. I started getting desperate and really just wanted to change, so that I could get back to feeling like I was capable again, without the continuous bouts of anxiety, stress and depression.—Michael Smith

Procrastination is real. The emotions you are feeling are valid, and there are ways to really allow the introspection necessary to deal with the core of what is causing you to procrastinate. Looking at some statistics, one in five people procrastinate to such a severe extent that their jobs, health and relationships became jeopardized. Multiple studies by universities and large corporations regarding the effects of procrastination on our psyche have concluded that procrastination enhances anxiety, potentiates depressive disorders, and can even result in memory loss. Those with chronic anxiety tend to eat less, leading to a compromised immune system that makes you prone to infections. They tend to sleep less due to the constant activity and thought processes bouncing between the neurons of their brain. They even drink more alcohol in order to tolerate their stressed state.

The journey that you take through this book will require you to perform some introspection and to be honest with yourself regarding the way in which you think, the emotions that you are feeling, and the situations that are causing you to feel as if your mind, thought processes, and judgement are clouded. At the end of your introspection, you will have honed in on the stressors and main causative agents that have potentiated the negative effects of your procrastination. You will also be educated on how to deal with these causative agents in a way that allows you to constantly manage yourself and your thoughts should these agents reappear. You will gain the motivation needed to turn your life around, as well as learn the skills needed to implement this change. In this way there will be a direct impact in the establishment of a more positive quality of life due to the decrease in stressed feelings, and a sense of rejuvenation as you no longer have these constant and nagging thoughts clouding your mind. You will begin to feel invigorated at the prospect of success as you start to realize that anything is possible, and that you can be the one to achieve it.

    Part 1: I Am Pro...crastination

Chapter 1: The Vicious Cycle of Procrastination

Procrastination is not a one-off occurrence. It is present as part of a constant cycle, based off of our body’s adaptation response to anxiety, stress, fear, and depression. We need to understand that procrastination is like becoming addicted to a drug, manifesting itself into impacting all spheres of your life. This cycle is difficult to escape, but don’t worry, we’ve got your back! Let’s take a look at how our body perceives procrastination. When we are confronted with a large amount of continuous stress, our bodies look for a momentary sense of relief, much like a scapegoat, which focuses on passively distracting our thought process from the stressful thought and not solving the actual problem at hand.

Anything that causes a level of stress in your life, whether it be emotional, mental, spiritual and even physical, can lead to your initiation into the vicious cycle of procrastination. It is important to remember that procrastination has the ability to make us feel completely paralyzed. This means that no matter how badly you want to move on in terms of the main task, you will remain stagnant within your procrastination cycle.

Once you start manifesting a negative mindset, you tend to seek a means of escape. That escape is procrastination. A typical cycle begins
