About this ebook
Much of my education I have acquired from my maternal grandmother: María Cristina Barrón. Among her teachings you always found a saying tailor-made for what occasion.
Over the years I have learned sayings from other people; in most cases, elderly women.
This book is intended to be a tribute to all of them and to the millions of women who have endured popular wisdom through the years through sayings. It is also a way to spread Spanish through the proverbs.
It is not intended to be just another book of sayings, since not all of them are —not even close— but they are all of them. The idea is to present some of the most popular sayings and comment on them from the humild and opinion of the writer.
The other intention of the work is that the sayings of these women endure over the years and do not fall into oblivion.
It is not a book —nor does it claim to be— that you consider your own, since many of the sayings are anonymous. It is a rec nowledge and pay for that s grandmothers who both offered their teachings and complained so little. To all of them: thank you, a thousand thanks.

A palabras necias oídos sordos (To foolish words deaf ears).Sometimes there are people who speak for speaking—or for not keeping silent—and say nonsense or absurd things. Many times without malicious intention and other timeswith the idea of offending.Thebestthingin these cases is to make yourselfconfusedor, directly, ignore what has been said.
A Dios rogando y con el mazo dando (A god begging and with the hammer giving).Very typical of those who do not lead by example, but whoboastabouthow toact on occasions or when faced with specific problems.Discriminate who is a smoke seller and who is not.
Ande o no ande caballo grande (Whether or not a large horse walks).Ideal saying for those who acquire somethingwith the intention ofappearing or becausethe objecthas arecognition ofquality or status

A caballo regalado no le mires el diente (Don't give a tooth to a gift horse). It is polite to be grateful when someonegivesyousomething.Although this isnot forany ofyourliking.Save for yourself the opinion that nobody has asked you... or lies.In situations like these it is justified. You will fit in well with the other person and avoid unwanted conflict.
A beber y a tragar, que el mundo se va a acabar (To drink and swallow, that the world is going to end). You have to takeadvantage of time, that precious asset that few people really recognize... until it's late.Time is real gold, the greatest asset you have. And it never recovers;every day you have less.
A la luz de la vela no hay mujer fea. No hay mujer fea, sino copas de menos (In the candlelight there is no ugly woman. There is nouglywoman, but glasses of less). It isquite macho, butI have included it for youortwo of itsaffiliates. In essence, more than one would sinwith anunattractivewoman andagainst her predilections. And itis fair, too, to state it by putting the genus femenino on an equal footing:By candlelight there is no ugly man.In this case, let me hesitate...
A mucha hambre, no hay pan duro. Al hambre de siete días, no hay pan duro (Very hungry, there is no hard bread. To the seven—day hunger, there is no hard bread). One of the worst things in this world is going hungry. In situations ofpoverty and malnutrition, anythingyouput into your mouth is good.Moving the issue tolarea where esténeeded s, a help to minimize the damage worth its weight in gold.In these cases, aid is important;even if they are of the lowest quality.
A cada puerco le llega su San Martín (Each pig receives its San Martín).It not always is given, but many times, ifdonesacts of dubious ethical endsgettingordeservedpunishment.Yourbadactions will happenninvoice.Offer well and you will get well.Do evil and they willanswer you with evil.
A quien no le sobra pan, no crie can (Who doesn't have bread left, they don't breed).Mistake that many people make.Do not swim in abundance and indulge in pleasures and whims. My grandfather already said it: if you earn three, save two and spend one.Do not underestimate financial education and, above all, practice it.
