Andrea Pearson

Andrea, a Brigham Young University graduate, is an avid reader and outdoor enthusiast (hiking, fishing, boating, biking, spending time in the Rocky Mountains, and taking walks). She spent a year and a half serving the Spanish speaking community in Toronto, Canada, and is fluent in 2 1⁄2 languages. She plays several instruments, not including the banjo, and loves putting together musical arrangements. Her favorite sports are basketball and football, though several knee surgeries and incurably awful coordination prevent her from playing them.Andrea is always in the mood for a good movie with close friends and family (especially her husband and mom), with a large glass of milk and a bowl of overly buttered popcorn nearby. She also enjoys oil painting, making earrings, squeezing every bit of oxygen out of Ziploc bags, and she hopes to someday travel to Italy and Alaska.Andrea has published three books.

    Dedication

    To Felicia Black

Shirley tossed her suitcase onto her bed, grateful to finally be back home, in the house she shared with her mother, from summer vacation. She knew it wasn’t normal for a teenager to hate vacations from school. As usual, though, nothing fun had happened during the summer months.

It wasn’t that Dad had been difficult to be around—he would have been hurt and annoyed if he ever heard she didn’t like being at his place. But she was simply more comfortable in Wellsville, where she spent the other nine months of the year.

Before she started unpacking, she needed a drink of water. The trip had been emotionally exhausting, as it usually was, and that always made her thirsty.

She wasn’t surprised to find the kitchen a complete wreck. Shirley knew how stressed her mother must be to let the place get this bad. Rather than go back to her room, she dug into the dishes, unloading and loading the dishwasher, then handwashing every last dirty item. Regardless of how tired she was, she knew how much not having to do the work herself would lift her mom’s spirits. And maybe, this time, Mom would notice.

When she’d finished with the dishes and countertops, Shirley picked a few daisies from the yard, putting them in a vase on the table where they’d brighten her mom’s day when she walked in. Daisies were her mother’s favorite flower.

She headed to her room and started unpacking. Her thoughts immediately flitted to school and how it started in a week. She couldn’t believe it was finally time. She couldn’t wait to be around Jacob again—to cross paths with him, see him smile and laugh as he talked to his friends . . . She closed her eyes, his face filling her vision.

And maybe now that she was seventeen—nearly an adult—she’d have the courage to tell him how she felt.

Thank goodness he and his girlfriend had broken up. The timing couldn’t be more perfect.

Just then, Mom walked by her door. Don’t get too comfortable, she said. I’ve got a company coming early Saturday to help us move—no sense putting everything away now only to have them pack it all up later. She glanced back toward the front of the house. Oh, and would you please clean up the kitchen? The floor is filthy. Shirley, I know you’ve just come from your dad’s place and that he doesn’t mind if you don’t carry your own weight, but here, you can’t expect me to do everything. Work is hard enough without an unmotivated teenager on my hands.

Mom continued on, heading to her room.

Shirley blinked, hands frozen over her laundry basket where she’d just dropped several dirty shirts. It took a moment for her to patch together what her mom had just said. Her mind ran past the hurtful things, grabbing on to the most important bit of information she’d learned.

She skidded out into the hallway. Moving? What do you mean, moving?

Mom tilted her head. Oh, didn’t I tell you? I accepted a job at a firm in Fort Collins, Colorado.

What? No, you didn’t tell me! Shirley felt her heart rate rise with panic. Mom, this is huge! I’m already signed up for classes! School starts in a week! She knew her mom regularly forgot to relay information, but this . . . this . . . There really weren’t words.

Oh. Mom glanced down, not meeting Shirley’s gaze. Well, we’ll just transfer everything to your new school.
