    Chapter 1

Michallynn Dupree turned off her car motor, checked her notes, and contemplated the modern storybook house in front of her.

    The address was right.

    146 Splendora Lane.

Though the sun was setting leaving the house in shadows, the two-story gabled house appeared to be in excellent condition. Even lived in. Lilac colored azaleas outlined the front of the house.

As she studied the house, a movement on a tree limb to her left caught her attention. A black bird sat on a low tree limb next to her car window.

As she looked back at the bird, it seemed to watch her with ebony eyes. She was first to look away, thankful she had her windows rolled up.

Jiggling the key in her hand, she steeled herself to get out of the car. But glancing back at the bird watching her with an eerie intent, she decided to wait until it left.

The town, Splendora, Louisiana, had not been on the map. Not only had it not been on the map, it hadn’t been located by google, nor had she been able to locate it on her GPS.

Essentially, the town did not exist. However, she sat within the city limits of Splendora. At least, that was, according to the little sign she had passed a mile or so back.

The land was heavily wooded, each house she had passed was nestled within trees.

Turning back to check on the status of the bird’s visit, she nearly jumped out of her skin. The bird was no longer there, but, instead, a man stood next to the bird’s limb, watching her. He seemed to have the same piercing ebony eyes of the bird.

He was tall, at least six feet, and svelte. His face was covered in what looked to be a couple of day’s stubble.

He was wearing dark jeans and a black t-shirt beneath a black leather jacket.

She swallowed thickly. Even though he was a little ominous looking, he was incredibly good-looking.

Her mind shot through a jumble of thoughts. Was he a criminal? A neighbor? She had no way of knowing, of course.

However, her instinct was to trust him. She turned to the stack of papers in her passenger seat, picked up a sheet of paper, and turned back to him.

    But he was gone.

    The bird wasn’t there either.

Taking her handbag, she got out of the car and slowly walked to the front door.

She knocked twice, and as she expected, no one answered.

Putting the key in the lock and holding her breath, she opened the door.

And stepped into a fully furnished, modern house with hardwood floors and a black leather sofa.

Intrigued, she went into the kitchen. Again, it was spotless and modern. It was much like her Dallas condo.

    Except that
