    No one was home.

    I checked my clipboard, glanced at the printed address on the paper.

    I was in the right place. The little picture matched the house, too. Not just one porch swing, but two. One of each side of the house.

    Besides that, it was the only place in the little town of Whistle Stop that didn’t have some kind of Christmas decoration.

    Not a single flickering light or inch of garland.

    There was, however, a black cat sunning in the little slice of evening sunlight that streamed across west side of the porch.

    I knocked again, prompting the big black cat to roll over on his back.

    Spider webs hung from the top of the porch. Only enough to be noticeable when the light was right, but spiderwebs, nonetheless.

    Black cats and spiderwebs.

    This house was sporting the wrong holiday.

    My heels clicked on the porch’s wood as I wandered down the porch and just happened to glance in the window.

    The inside of the house was furnished, but unoccupied.

    This is what happened when elderly people were forced into assisted living. They had to leave everything behind. Everything they had spent a lifetime accumulating.
