    Snowflakes collected on the outside of the airport windows.

    It wasn’t supposed to be snowing today. Or any day, for that matter, in Houston.

    Typically, Houston’s winter was like everyone else’s spring or fall.

    But not today.

    Today of all days.

    The one day I needed to get out of here.

    I kept my head down, my eyes on my iPad.

    Although I had a novel on the screen, I wasn’t reading.

    Reading was part of my disguise.

    That and the ripped, faded blue jeans I wore.

    The Olivia everyone knew would never board a plane in ripped blue jeans and a hoodie.

    But no one would notice the girl who looked more like she lived in a college apartment instead of working in a high-rise corporate office building.

    A teenage boy sat down next to me, opened a foil wrapped hamburger, and started eating.

    I leaned imperceptibly away from him. The last thing I needed was to inadvertently attract the attention of a teenage boy.

    I’d always been told I looked younger than I was. At twenty-five, I was still carded on a regular basis.

    A flight attendant came over the speaker and made the announcement that all flights were delayed. Again.

    No one seemed to care.

    They sat there, tethered to the phone charging station. Or, like the boy next to me, eating.

    I stared at my ticket. My plane was supposed to have left an hour ago.

    It was probably going to be cancelled.

    But I was an optimist by nature. I would hold out hope until the moment someone announced that the flights were cancelled.

    One of the pilots stood up and went to the counter.

    As he spoke to the flight attendant, she smiled and played with her hair.

    I checked my watch.

    And tapped the ticket against my thigh.
