Andrea Pearson

Andrea, a Brigham Young University graduate, is an avid reader and outdoor enthusiast (hiking, fishing, boating, biking, spending time in the Rocky Mountains, and taking walks). She spent a year and a half serving the Spanish speaking community in Toronto, Canada, and is fluent in 2 1⁄2 languages. She plays several instruments, not including the banjo, and loves putting together musical arrangements. Her favorite sports are basketball and football, though several knee surgeries and incurably awful coordination prevent her from playing them.Andrea is always in the mood for a good movie with close friends and family (especially her husband and mom), with a large glass of milk and a bowl of overly buttered popcorn nearby. She also enjoys oil painting, making earrings, squeezing every bit of oxygen out of Ziploc bags, and she hopes to someday travel to Italy and Alaska.Andrea has published three books.

A dead leaf crunched under my foot, making me jump, and I glanced down in surprise. It was spring—there shouldn’t have been dead leaves anywhere. At least not the kind that still had crunch to them.

My gaze dragged back to the fence and the bedraggled row of poplars behind it that marked the line between my parents’ property and the city’s. Nothing appeared out of the ordinary, but the fact that I’d jumped when I stepped on a leaf really showed just how nervous I’d become. As I approached, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong.

Sunset was at least forty-five minutes away, but the lightness in the air had disappeared, and the heavy feeling of night had descended over everything. I swallowed, trying not to dwell on the warning that pounded rhythmically against my ribs.

Instead of giving in to irrational panic, I took a deep breath and thought over the homework assignments that had forced me to cancel kung fu for the next little while. With finals only two weeks away, I had a lot going on, and I’d left my high school in a brainless daze. So much to do. Too bad it had crowded out martial arts, the one thing that was guaranteed to help me focus. But school sometimes had to come first.

All thoughts of those problems fled my mind when the tall poplars finally cleared, giving me a view of my house. The feeling surrounding it was foreboding, creepy. Dangerous even. Was it really an omen? A warning of something to come? Or had something bad already happened?

For the first time in many, many years, I really saw the house. It was run-down, old, dilapidated. I vowed to help my parents fix it up as soon as finals were over. They had enough on their plates and hadn’t been able to keep up.

The moment my foot landed on my property, the hair on the back of my neck rose. A weird pressure settled in
