Chapter One
Nick shoved his hands in his pockets, hating the feeling of eyes on him as he and his new friend, Jessie, walked away from the grocery store. As long as he didn’t react to the people staring, they’d eventually grow accustomed to seeing him around, he was sure of it. He just hated the awkward and uncomfortable feeling that came from them watching.
He and his mom had just moved to Geode City, a small town of only a couple thousand people in the middle of nowhere. School started soon, and thank goodness—summer had never felt so long in his entire life. He knew that he’d feel more at home once he got into the daily routine of assignments, classes, and teachers’ lectures.

He’d never remember anything—it wasn’t possible, so he let his mind wander instead.
He and Jessie had met in the town’s only grocery store. His mom was the store’s new general manager—the reason they’d moved here—and Jessie’s mom worked in the deli. Jessie’s dad was the sheriff of Geode City.
