    Imust say, it wasn’t the warmest welcome I’d ever had in a town. Not the worst, but definitely in the top three of the worst.

    Seventeen guns pointed at me.

    My own gun rudely taken from me when I wasn’t expecting it.

    And the promise of death.

    These guys weren’t fucking around. They wanted to kill me. The only reason they hadn’t done so was because of my uniform.

    People were a bit scared of the army; killing an active soldier, especially an Agent in the Intelligence Division, was sure to bring the wrath of the High Command.

    But then these people were way beyond caring about that.

    Let’s kill him, said one. We’ll bury the body. Say the demons got him.

    What if they suspect us? said another.

    They won’t. Besides, they won’t even know he’s here. He hasn’t made contact yet.

    Damn, they were right. My own radio was broken and I hadn’t had a chance to send a message yet. So no one would know where I was. As far as headquarters was concerned, I would just vanish. Eaten by demons on the road, the official report would say. If it said anything at all. Most likely, they would just assume I ran away.

    I don’t want to kill you, I said. Put down your weapons.

    I heard several laughs. Clearly they thought they had me.

    I unbuttoned the sleeve of my shirt to reveal my tattoos. I then said the Words to release my magic.

    Last chance, I said, as I prepared to murder seventeen people.

    But I’m getting ahead of myself.

    The whole shit started when I answered a call from headquarters. A strange case.
