The Ghost Highway To Scotland - Shantnu Tiwari

The wind was blowing very fast. My fedora hat almost blew off. At one point, I had to bend to my knees to avoid being blown away too.

Beside me, Kernel was worried. She was growling softly. Her hair was standing on end which usually meant she was in a fighting mood.

Just five minutes ago, this had been a simple farm on a sunny day. There had been no wind and the sun had been shining so bright I was drenched in sweat. I had been thinking about taking a siesta, continuing my walk in the evening when the temperature was cooler.

    And then, it appeared.

A swirling tornado. Red in colour. The red was from all the humans it had killed and eaten. I knew this particular tornado would turn grey if it hadn’t eaten in a while.

And it was really dangerous then.

I knew because I had been hunting this demon for six months now.

Now it was red, so I knew it was full. The town of York was to the south and I was sure the demon had feasted there.

The thing was playing with me. It would come near me, close enough for me to attack; and just as I was getting ready, it would jump back.

Of course, I could keep up my magic attacks, but not indefinitely. One day I would get tired and the demon would rip me apart.

Or maybe it would make a mistake and I would tear it like paper.

Such was life. Sometimes, the demon ate you. And sometimes, you ate the demon.

Today, the demon, who roamed the countryside in a tornado like form, was keeping its distance. Not that it mattered; it had fed so it was super strong. And though it was more than fifty feet away the wind was so strong I was almost being blown off my feet.

The warm day was gone; it was cold now. My shirt, wet with sweat, was making me feel even colder. What was it trying to do, freeze me to death?

But demons didn’t think like that. As far as I knew. They had appeared more than twenty years ago, killed half the planet before we had learnt to fight back. And so we knew a lot about killing them, but not much about where they came
