The Voices in My Head Are Crazy - Shantnu Tiwari

    1

As I walked down the dark moonlit night, I was sure someone was following me.

But when I turned around, there was no one there.

    Except for the silence.

The silence was unnerving. It was not normal. For once, even the voices in my head were silent.

The moon had just been covered with a cloud and I could barely see my way. I was just walking one step at a time, hoping I was on the path. Hoping I didn’t end up someplace unknown.

A gentle wind was blowing and yet, I felt icy cold.

Someone was following me; I was sure of it.

I walked fast, as fast as I dared in the dark. I had no light, not even a phone. I’m homeless, you see. Someone told me a local charity was having a meal for homeless people, and they might even put me up for the night. As a homeless guy, I had to live one night at a time. And so I had decided to go, even though it was a fair walk away.

I took a shortcut through this park. The hustle and bustle and lights of the city had fallen away, leaving me all alone in the dark park.

    But something was wrong.

It was only seven in the evening. This park should be full. It officially closed at 11 p.m., and was full of evening joggers and people taking a shortcut from their work to the entertainment district like I was. Every single time I had come here, it was chock full of people. Even at ten at night.

So why was it so quiet now?
