A Bullet for Monday - Ishan De

    Chapter 1:

    Sunday.

    God, I hate Sundays.

The weekend marks the beginning of another stupid week ahead. Mondays are awful and all the way through to Friday, a sense of hope arises as the weekend approaches. Saturdays are the best. It is what we should be looking forward to, but I cannot.

The morons around me say that I should live in the moment, but how can I when I know Sunday will appear again and crush the excitement of my day off?

Time is a cruel sadistic master. It plunges me into this vicious cycle of hope, makes me beg for my share and as soon as it appears, it swiftly crushes any hope I have of happiness.

And it happens over and over again.

I stare through the window at the dismal world outside. The overcast sullen skies reflect my depression.

Well! At least the universe is aligned with me

    I chuckle to myself.

The overpowering smell of the earth interrupts my moment of cynical pleasure. It corrodes my nostrils and makes me wretch. Looks like the rain has nothing better to do but reveal the rotten stench of the soil. For a moment, it did hide the putrid, decrepit smell of the city, but I know as soon as the rain goes, I can smell the city again.

I take my raincoat and head downstairs. I need to salvage as much of my Sunday as I can. As I walk on the street, the constant drizzle has an irritating presence. The water trickles from the tip of my raincoat’s hoodie, onto my forehead. Every time I wipe it off, another drop appears. I keep walking, I cannot give in to nature’s water torture.

The streets were empty and abandoned. The annoying citizen were all at home, hooked onto their Sundays and desperately enjoying the fix like a junkie.

Three scruffy louts were standing around something and laughing maniacally. I could not see what it was. Fucking rain!! Why did you have to bring the fog along with you?

I drew closer and saw a half-conscious bloke, curled into a fetal position, being kicked repeatedly by the three louts. The bloke spat out some blood and lay there without putting up a fight. That did not stop the louts from kicking him again.

I knew those faces. They were Baxter’s men. You don’t fuck with Baxter’s men.

As I walked past them, they noticed my presence and took a temporary break from their ritual of inflicting pain. One of the louts whistled at me while the other two puckered their lips and made the shrillest, most irritating sounds ever.

Hey there hot stuff!! Would love to have those long sexy legs wrapped around me.

I ignored them and kept walking. A small pebble came flying past my ear and bounced a few feet away. For bunch of goons, they did have awful aim. I did not stop, nor did I bat an eyelid. I kept walking. Their short attention span got the better of them.

You are such a tease!, shouted one.

Then I heard a thud and they were back to kicking the shit out of the bloke again. Seems like he tried to get up and make an escape, but the helpless loser did lack common sense. When you are knocked down, you stay down.

Maybe he will learn that today, maybe not. This could be his last day on earth. At least he won’t have to worry about Monday. The lucky bastard!!

I reached the local bakery and
