    About the Author

    One

Awall of heat strikes me as I open the door, and I can barely breathe. Work’s done for another day.

Damn, Stacey, that’s hot. Tara’s transition lenses darken.

Yes, I miss the A.C. already. I take a swig of my bottled water.

I can’t wait to get to the community club for a dip in the pool. She ties her blonde hair atop her head, her bright blue purse flies around from her arm.

I’m glad you talked me into it. See you there.

Tara’s heels click on the pavement as she runs across the street to her little red hot-rod.

As I grip the driver-side door handle on my beige 2003 Ford Fusion, I sigh. What else does she do to afford such a sweet ride? Wait, who am I kidding? I’d never waste my money on one of those. There’re more important things to buy.

Tara pulls a U-turn in the middle of traffic, horns honking at her, and she waves while speeding by.

    She’ll never grow up.

Ten minutes of driving, and I pull into the parking lot at the club. Tara is standing near the entrance flirting with a handsome hunk with dark-brown hair, and no shirt. He holds a cigarette to her lips, and she takes a drag. So much for quitting...

Before getting out, I take my backpack from the backseat.

Tara perches at the top of the stairs. There are gorgeous guys inside.

I laugh. Including the one you were just flirting with?

Exactly. He’s a trainer in the gym and he’s off right away.

How do you do that? I hold the door for her, the scent of chlorine wafts our way.

    Do what? Meet handsome men?

    No, pick up strays.
