Halloween Night
I know she’s up to something. I’ve been watching her for the last few days and there is something going on. For a start, she’s going to the Halloween party tonight. That’s not her thing at all. My darling sister would never lower herself to attend an event like that. She never joins in on anything, and she certainly wouldn’t be caught dead at a sorority house. Our parents think it is a great idea though. They were so enthusiastic that I can’t help but wonder if they are in on whatever scheme she has hatched now. Why do they always side with her? But of course she’s the perfect daughter, the star; the one who will make them proud. I’m the outcast; the disappointment from the first moment I dared question their grand plan.
She’s always gotten everything she ever wanted. Well not tonight, whatever she’s planning, I will stop her. Whatever it takes.
Chapter One
Jesse
What is wrong with this picture?
I ask, sipping from a blue beer cup. It’s warm, but I need it.
I know. I thought there would be a lot more girls here. This is a sorority, for God’s sake,
Trace says.
What about that one?
Dale asks. He gulps back his beer and belches loudly.
The girl he is pointing at is dressed as a naughty nurse, leaving little to the imagination.
No, what’s wrong is, we’re at one of the biggest parties of the year, in the hottest sorority on campus, and the three of us are standing in the corner like a bunch of losers.
Where should we be standing?
Trace asks. He fiddles with the lanyard around his neck. He’s dressed as a computer tech; not too much of a stretch, since computers are his life.
I’d like to be standing in her bedroom,
Dale says, still leering at the nurse. She catches him staring and flips him off. That doesn’t put Dale off. He is nothing if not persistent. Not that it ever gets him anywhere. His outfit consists of a Hawaiian shirt with Bermuda shorts, and a Lei around his neck. The problem is, it isn’t that different from what he usually wears to class. He never did have much of an imagination.
I’m not too sure of my own outfit. I put it together myself, since I’m saving all my money to get my car fixed. I’m dressed as a knight. I made armor from aluminum foil and a fake sword to match, which hangs in a scabbard at my waist. I guess it is kind of lame.
No girl is going to come up to us while we’re together,
I say.
Are you trying to get rid of us, dude?
Dale asks.
I sigh in frustration. Why is it always up to me to take the lead? It’s been the same way our whole lives. Trace is too scared and Dale doesn’t give a crap. It’s not like I’m a ladies man myself, but I have to try.
I don’t want college to end up like high school. Do you? I thought we made a deal when we came here? That we would stop being dorks, that we were going to reinvent ourselves.
They both shake their heads. High school was an endless cycle of loser-dom. Getting beat up every day, never being invited to any of the good parties, and girls not exactly tripping over themselves to date us. The only time I was ever alone with a girl was when I was tutoring them in bio.
Well I’m done being that guy. We all are.
We are?
Trace asks.
Yes! Come on, let’s make a pact. Tonight is going to change our lives, one way or another.
Yeah! We get laid or die trying,
Dale says. Let’s do this. I call dibs on the nurse.
He lurches in her direction.
Meet by the dorm in the morning, tell us how it went,
Trace calls after him.
I knock back another beer and head for the kitchen, leaving Trace alone.

Trace
I shuffle my feet nervously. It’s easy for the other two. Dale has the alcohol to spur him on and Jesse has the looks.
I’m a computer geek; more comfortable at a keyboard, or with a controller in my hands.
Finishing my drink, I leave the main room. All the girls here seem to have come with someone and none of them even give me a second look.
I’ve never been inside a sorority house before. I hear this one has a reputation for the craziest parties. A few people even died a couple years back. Heart failure, I heard. They probably took drugs.
Leaving the crowd behind, I move to the back of the house.
As I pass a partially open door, I let out a gasp. Standing before me is the hottest woman I’ve ever seen.
Tall, with dark hair in a long braid that hangs over her left shoulder, she is wearing a skin-tight red leather bikini top and miniskirt. The outfit shows off every curve, her breasts are threatening to burst out of the top.
Stumbling toward her, I’m sure this is some kind of mirage. As I get closer, I can see the glint in her eye, and the come-hither stare she is giving me.
I reach out for her. She doesn’t back away, just stands waiting for me.
My hands collide with a flat surface and my dream woman tips over onto the floor.
What the hell?
I mutter.
Hey! What did you do to Sonja?
bellows a voice from the basement below.
Footsteps thunder up the stairs, and a chubby guy in glasses grabs ‘Sonja’ and props her against the wall.
It’s a cardboard cutout,
I say, finally catching on.
How dare you! Sonja is a goddess,
the guy argues, as he affectionately caresses the cut out’s cheek.
I suspect he does a lot more with it behind closed doors.
Is she in a movie or something?
I ask.
The guy eyes me suspiciously. What’s it to you?
Forget it,
I say. I turn to walk away.
Wait. Do you want to see something cool?
the guy asks.
I shrug. Sure.
I follow the guy downstairs, hoping he isn’t going to show me his porn collection.
I’m Lester,
the guy says.
Trace.
That’s a weird name.
It’s my surname. My first name is Missingwithouta,
I joke.
Lester looks confused. Is that some kind of Indian name?
Yeah, sure,
I sigh. No one gets my humor.
When we reach the basement, Lester reveals a kick ass gaming system hooked up to a 60- inch plasma.
A game is paused on screen and the character is Sonja. The graphics are the best I’ve ever seen.
What is this?
"I’m beta testing a new game called Dagger’s Edge. Sonja is the lead. You have got to try it, man. It’s the next step in VR."
He holds out a headset for me.
Virtual reality?
"I know. It’s unlike anything else. You’re actually there, man."
I gotta try this,
I say, grabbing the headset. I sit on the couch and put on the headset. Everything goes black for a second.
What now?
I ask.
Just a sec, I’ll upload you into the game,
Lester says.
I wait. Nothing happens. I was about to remove the headset when something sharp pierces my right temple.
Ow!
I cry. I try to pull off the headset, but it won’t budge.
A bright light erupts in front of me, temporarily blinding me. When it recedes, I open my eyes to find that I am standing outside in a field and it is daylight. A copse of trees is off to my right, a low stone wall to my left.
What the hell?
I turn in a circle, trying to figure out where I am.
Lester?
I call.
I feel my head for the headset, but it isn’t there. This is real.
You, traveler. Do you have the key?
Before me stands Sonja, but not a CGI version of her. This is a flesh and blood version.
Wow. You’re real,
I say, taking in every detail.
She takes a step toward me. Up close, she is intimidating. She is four inches taller than me, and has muscles I can only dream of.
Do you have the key?
she asks again. She has a hint of an English accent.
I, uh, what key?
You need the key to pass,
she says.
I don’t have it.
She circles me, sizing me up. She grabs the sword strapped to her back and unsheathes it.
I jump back. Whoa, calm down. No need to get violent.
I challenge you to a duel.
I don’t have a weapon,
I say.
Before I finish speaking, a broadsword materializes in my own hand. I stare at it in shock. Where did it come from?
I don’t have time to figure it out as she swings her sword at me. I bring my own up automatically.
Hey lady. I don’t want to fight!
I protest.
She isn’t listening. All I can do is block each blow.
She’s going to kill me, I think.
When one of her blows goes wide, I run to the trees for shelter.
Lester! If this is some kind of trick, it’s not funny,
I scream.
I can see a bridge up ahead, and I head straight for it. It doesn’t look very stable, the boards look rotten, but I don’t have a choice as Sonja is close behind. And to think I wanted her to be the mother of my children.
This can’t be real; either this is the best VR game ever or I’m dreaming. That’s it. I drank far too much and passed out and this is some bizarre nightmare.
I glance over my shoulder. Sonja is closing the gap fast, a look of grim determination on her face. Dream or not, I don’t think anything good will happen if she catches me.
I reach the bridge. As I cross to the other side, a voice booms, Level Two.
Suddenly, my clothes are transformed into battle armor. It is a game.
Sonja catches up to me.
I summon the memory of every sword playing game I’ve ever played. And there was a lot. When I reached Level Two, I must have upgraded, because now I can fight. I match every blow and even get in a few of my own. The tide has turned and Sonja is struggling to keep up.
I block a blow and manage to wrestle the sword from her. A kick to the gut sends her sprawling in the dirt.
Ha! I win,
I crow, pointing the sword at her.
When she stares up at me with the baby blues and heaving bosom, I hesitate.
No hard feelings, baby,
I say, offering my hand to help her up. Let’s get out of here.
After a moment, she takes my hand. Her face softens.
I grin at her. So, is there a tavern or something nearby?
She smiles at me. Would you like a kiss?
Now you’re talking,
I close my eyes. Let me have it, babe.
She rams a dagger through my chest.
***
Lester watches Trace writhe about on the floor. The headset slips off, and Trace stops moving, his eyes staring vacantly at the ceiling.
‘Game over’ appears on the screen.
Told you so,
Lester says.
Chapter Two
I watch from the stairs, hidden from view, as the last drop of life drains away from the boy’s body. I run through the possible reasons she has for killing him and keep coming back
