    About the Author

    One

My fingers are frozen ! I should have stopped at Walmart to replace these damn gloves. Kendra’s place is only two blocks away, but at forty-one below with the wind chill, what was I thinking? Oh, right, Jamie Frasier. Outlander season five is airing tonight. Who wouldn’t love a red-headed, half-naked, buff Scotsman?

A car drives nearby but isn’t passing. I glance over my shoulder. Headlights blind me. What are you doing, jack-ass?

I pick up my pace. It still does not pass.

My heart races. Are they following me?

The horn blares, and I flinch. I face the vehicle. What is your problem?!

The small blue Taurus comes to a stop. Laughter is all I hear as the window rolls down, and Kendra pokes her head out. "I got you so good!"

    Are you shitting me?

"I love scaring you. You jumped, like, five feet."

Not possible. Ken, you’re such a bitch.

Kendra continues to laugh. Meet you there! Oh, and I picked up some vodka! The car zooms past and turns into her driveway half a block away.

I shake my head. She finally learned from last season; vodka is way better than red wine. Why didn’t she just pick me up? Fuck, she drives me nuts.

A car door shuts, and a woman screams. My body goes numb. I stop moving and listen closer.

    No! Please!

    Is that Kendra? Another prank?

    More high-pitched screams.

Either she’s been practicing, or she’s in real danger. I run down the snow-and-ice-covered sidewalk. Ken! Kendra!

As I reach the edge of her property a silhouette, a shadow, takes off running in the opposite direction.

Hey, you! Stop! Shit, he’s fast.

A trail of red paints the snow. It leads from the open garage to the front steps. There lies Kendra. Facedown, as though she fell up the stairs.

Kendra! Cutting across the yard, I trudge through the snow in my short boots.

    A house-door closes nearby.

Dropping to my knees next to her, I push the beautiful, long, brown curly hair from her face. Her eyes are un-seeing, pupils unresponsive.

No! This isn’t real. Kendra! I shake her. Pranks over! Who the fuck ran down the road? I pat her cool cheek. Ken?

    She isn’t moving.

I stand. Help! Someone please help me! My chest hurts. My heart pounds, and I can
