It was a rainy day. Reema stared out over Verrazano Narrows. Through her right eye she saw New Jersey, bristling with concrete piers and smokestacks. In her left eye was the butt of Long Island, a few trees visible, but likewise overdeveloped. Reema had gotten to know the strait very well, and when she could afford to, she kept her eyes open for ferries. Today was her chance.

Reggie hadn’t found the Statue of Liberty. His agents were combing the world, he said, but he was trying hard to not reveal what he was looking for. If anyone found out he was looking for the original Statue, there’d be trouble. Two days before Reema’s job was supposed to end, he visited her to ask if she would stay for another week.

You’ll get the same salary, Reggie begged. The deal still stands.

No problem, Reema sighed, holding him in her hand. I’ve got nothing better to do.

Seven days later Reema was ready to go home, but again Reggie asked her to stay. Please, he said. I need you.

Four weeks had passed: twenty-eight days of posing for photographs, eighteen hours a day. Twenty-eight days of staring at the same suspension bridge. Twenty-eight days of being ignored.
