Now, for today’s big announcement,
said Mr. Niedermeyer. He stood up and wrote HOME AND FAMILY PROJECT
on the blackboard.
Susie didn’t notice. She wondered if Bobby Manchester was watching her. He sat directly behind her, and Susie worried what her hair looked like
As you know,
Mr. Niedermeyer explained, pacing in front of the blackboard. No Health class would be complete without some sort of preparation for parenthood.
Susie heard Bobby’s pencil scratching across the desk behind her.
He’s taking notes, she sighed. Thank goodness! That give me some time to fix my hair.
Mr. Niedermeyer continued. You’re all healthy, well-adjusted young men and women. Half of you will go on to great careers. Half of you will go on to become great housewives.
Susie heard Bobby’s pencil stop moving and she heard his desk creak. He’s sitting up. Is my hair right? Oh gosh, should I fix my hair—no, she thought. If he sees me fixing my hair he’ll think that I’m vain…but if he sees my hair is a mess, then he’ll think I’m a slob. What am I going to do?
She sat there, outwardly cool but, on the inside, inside frozen with indecision. Susie hoped that Bobby would not see her if she did not move at all.
Like a chameleon or a pygmy seahorse, she thought.
So,
Mr. Niedermeyer concluded. Present to me your proposals for a parenting project. This will be your final grade for the course.
The bell rang.
Susie blinked. Wait, what did he say?
I can’t wait to see what you boys and girls come up with. Good day!
Bobby stood up and walked right by her. Susie looked up just long enough to bask in his sandy, well-combed hair. His slacks and plaid shirt were so crisp that Susie could hear them rustle faintly as he disappeared from view. He was gone, and he had barely looked at her. Susie put her face in her hands and sighed.
Hurry up, Susie,
Mr. Niedermeyer chided. You don’t want to be late.
Oh! Sorry, sir.
She picked up her books and hurried out into the hall, her face flush with embarrassment. She had been in a tizzy all day, and now not only had she missed what the announcement was, but she had no idea how to get Bobby’s attention.
He’s just so dreamy, Susie thought as she walked to chemistry class. Every time he’s near me, I feel like a helpless little child. How am I even going to talk to him? If he asks me out to the Spring
