Billy stood in the medicine aisle, his ball cap lying on the floor, staring at the display of vitamins on the shelf. He’d seen them on TV for weeks.
Mom, they’re here!
Honey, pick up your hat. Come on, we’ve got to go.
Mom!
Billy said, his eyes gleaming. Can we get these vitamins, please?
Mom squinted. These were the chewable vitamins for kids. Billy had never asked for vitamins before, though of all the things he had asked her to buy him, this was probably the least strange of them all. That’s what she thought until she fiddled with her glasses and realized which vitamins he was pointing to.
Please, please, please, please, please!
Billy begged.
No.
Mom grabbed the cart and walked on.
Why not?
Because,
she frowned. Princes vitamins are for girls.
But Mom, they’re just like the other vitamins! They’re good for you.
Why don’t we just get the football vitamins instead.
But I don’t want those ones,
he moaned. "I want these ones."
Mom looked around. There was a woman in front of her who was just leaving the aisle. At the other end, there was a man just entering the aisle, taking his time as he looked for deodorant. He could probably hear everything that Billy was saying.
